This is incredible. This is Graham Allison, the Founding Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government - who taught generations of US leaders - and former Assistant Secretary of Defense. Here is what he says on the "rules-based order": "We say we're the exceptional nation. What does that mean? That means we make the rules and you're supposed to obey the rules. But we don't obey the rules. So we say we're for the rules-based order. Excuse me the rules-based order was the basis with which we invaded Iraq? I don't think so. That we occupied Afghanistan? I don't think so. The US has made a lot of mistakes of unnecessary wars."

The irony of US-led multilateral institutions - WTO, World Bank, etc - is even dominance isn’t enough! It's the "rules-based international order," folks! They make the rules and we all just follow orders, thank you very much. It’s their world, and we’re just lucky to live in it.

What exactly is this so called rules based order? It looks more like a set of rules others are expected to follow while Western governments feel free to do the worst things imaginable. Looting countries. Engineering coups whose outcomes are always tragic. Proxy wars. Full scale wars launched on false excuses that they later quietly admit were false. I always wonder how the politicians who preach about this rules based order manage to keep a straight face. The contradiction is so obvious that it borders on comedy.
