American filmmaker David Lynch said multiple times that Billy Wilder's classic film noir “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) is one of the films that shaped his artistic vision more than any other. David Lynch on why Laura Dern & Nicholas Cage were the only choice to play the lead characters in "Wild at Heart" (1990): "Interviewer: Having seen Laura Dern as the naive and almost totally innocent Sandy in 'Blue Velvet' (1986), I was surprised by your casting of her as the very hot Lula in 'Wild at Heart' (1990). At the time that seemed like radical casting. Lynch: No. For me it was Laura all the way though. A lot of people found that inconceivable. They knew and respected her work, but they couldn’t see her playing Lula. But every character is made up of so many little subtleties, strange choices, odd little ways of saying a word.
