I’ve been living in Helsinki for almost six years, and there are so many things I notice daily that many locals seem to overlook. The fact that you can walk around your neighborhood late at night without worrying about being robbed is mind-blowing. The fact that no one is dying of hunger, public transport runs smoothly, the tap water is excellent, the streets are clean—these are just a few examples. Honestly, I don’t blame people here for not fully appreciating what they have. Sometimes, it takes stepping away to realize how beautiful home truly is. We only truly appreciate things in comparison, and that can be a huge issue in my opinion. I see people in some of the wealthiest countries, with the highest standards of living, complaining about things that don’t even register as problems in less fortunate places. Don’t get me wrong—pain and joy are relative. Complaining is part of the human drive for improvement, and I understand that. But there are objective truths. Complaints aren’t inherently bad when they’re balanced by an awareness of these truths. The truth is: If you live in Finland, you are blessed. Never forget that.

That the wrong people are in power, and the wrong people are out of power. I start from the supposition that all we have to do is think about the state of the world today, and realize that things are all upside down.
