Never once in my life did I ever think I would experience a -76% trade, but here we are. Europe’s oldest surviving operating theatre… Built in 1822 in the Attic of St Thomas Church in London right above the women’s ward. Before this was built, they were literally cutting people open on the ward itself, in front of other patients. In this room patients were awake the whole time with no ether or chloroform or antiseptic or anything like that. Assistants held you down to stop you from leaving and restraints were sometimes used. If you are lucky you may get a gag to bite on. Amputations that went “well” lasted less than a minute because shock and blood loss could kill you in under two. Most of what happened on that table was an attempt at surgery. Infection finished a lot of them a few days later. Nobody even understood germs. Surgeons worked bare-handed in coats already stained from the last case, causing further infection. If you ended up in a room like this, you were probably done for. 1822 was a brutal year for that, and the table was the last resort when all else failed. All with an audience staring down from the tiers, which makes it even stranger.
