Thief is a Michael Mann masterpiece. The more I’ve watched this, the more it’s morphed into an all-time favorite because the filmmaking here is really mature & really detailed. James Caan was a force of nature. The fact he’s gone still doesn’t feel real. He couldn’t be better.

Michael Mann is a fucking genius. This sequence between Robert Prosky & James Caan at the end of Thief is Mann firing on all cylinders. Prosky matches Caan’s intensity the entire way. It’s why the look on Caan’s face at the end of this scene says it all. “Back to work, Frank….”

James McAvoy says he was told by an actress that he wasn’t good looking enough to be with her on-screen, and that their relationship wouldn’t feel believable to the audience. “I was told once by an actress that it was an interesting choice, my casting, because nobody would usually believe that I would be with somebody like her.
