I think the look on Caan’s face is a mix of two realizations: 1) he didn’t fully understand who he was getting into work with. Like Ryan Coogler said in his Closet Picks, Mann did a great job at slowly pulling apart the layers of Prosky’s character. And 2) I also think Caan’s character Frank is realizing the only clean way out is whacking Leo before he skips town

Thief is a Michael Mann masterpiece. The more I’ve watched this, the more it’s morphed into an all-time favorite because the filmmaking here is really mature & really detailed. James Caan was a force of nature. The fact he’s gone still doesn’t feel real. He couldn’t be better.
