Inspite of the provocation from people who were guarded by police and the military, our team remained calm and didn’t respond to the provocation. I’m sure police was eagerly waiting for one of our people to even point a finger at the provokers and they would react. One wonders, what would happen had it been NUP supporters who had raided a campaign of the NRM. They would now be in some torture basement, if not the grave! These are all signs of cowardice and desperation by the NRM regime, but Uganda will be free!!

As we held our campaign today in Kibuli-Makindye East for the NUP Parliamentary flag-bearer, some 5 youth raided our campaign grounds, clad in Mr. Museveni’s tshirts and holding his posters. This was a clear sign of provocation, so we asked the Territorial police and military which was present to escort them out to avoid a potential confrontation, because according to the schedule it was NUP meant to be at the premises. Police ignored our pleas, so our supporters then escorted them out of the place. We condemn this provocation, and the in-action by the territorial police. Had it been NUP supporters who had raided a scheduled rally of NRM candidates, police and the military would have brutality arrested them and detained them!!

Our shameless IGP, Abas Byakagaba today called a press conference and said NUP supporters are shot at, beaten and tear-gassed because of holding processions during campaigns. Meanwhile, NRM supporters today in Mbarara closed all roads and held processions as they waited for their candidate…something they do regularly. So according to this man Abas Byakagaba, processions are illegal if it is NUP, but very okay and legal if it is NRM!!

These are NRM supporters heading to Electoral Commission headquarters today, to submit signatures for Mr Museveni’s candidature. Just this week, our candidates and supporters were roughed up and arrested outside EC offices, apparently to prevent them from holding processions. The Electoral Commission and Police will act like they didn’t see this…or maybe it’s only a problem when it’s the opposition. If it is NRM fellows, then there’s no problem at all. This impunity is what we all must fight to end resoundingly. While we don’t have a problem with NRM moving with their supporters (whether real or rented), the same principle ought to apply across the board!!

This was Hoima as Candidate Yoweri Museveni held campaigns there today. We don’t begrudge NRM for holding processions, because this is inevitable and expected during campaigns. Our quarrel is the partisan police and military which brutalizes NUP supporters for holding processions. The sickening double standards should concern every right thinking Ugandan, regardless of your political beliefs!
