His answer wasn’t what you’d expect, and it really caught my attention as a designer. He said: “Honestly, just normal people.” As a designer, I love that. His dream was to be a director but this job was “dream-adjacent”, which put his “real ambition to sleep”. It all changed when an older guy in his friend group — about 5 years older — turned 30 and suddenly became quite bitter about how he hadn’t achieved much in his 20s. He felt like his life was out of control, but this was one thing he could control. "I just was like, if I could do one thing to know that I’m making some positive change in my life, I’m going to quit smoking. So on October 19th, 1994, I did a lifetime quit on cigarettes and then every day for that year after that, that I didn’t smoke, it was something I could feel good about. So I was like, okay, I did something for myself today by not smoking." The wins started to stack. I asked him what he was writing about. What was his process?
