An email sent to An Taoiseach Simon Harris TD this morning. I’ll keep you all posted if I hear back ❤️ Hi Simon, I am writing to you as an incredibly concerned parent of an 8.5 year old boy, Harvey. Harvey has Spina bifida and scoliosis which in itself is challenging, but when those conditions are coupled with a lack of access to therapy, a hospital that is potentially misappropriating funds, and incredibly long wait lists for urgent and life changing surgeries, then it becomes impossible to adequately care for your child. Harvey had an Xray in January 2024 that showed his scoliosis curve is at 110°, if you have read in to scoliosis then I am sure you are aware how this is at a point where it is detrimental to his health and quality of life. Harvey was under Connor Green and was listed for urgent surgery in February 2022 after repeated pneumonia infections, 30 months later he is still only on the surgical list under Connor Green as he does not have a surgeon willing to operate. The task force you hold in such high regard has not made contact with my family, nor is there any details online of how to contact them to enquire as to when your child will finally be treated. You continually tell families like ours that you care, and you have been promising to fix this since 2017. 2017 was the year we were told that Harvey’s ribs were crushing his lungs and controlling his scoliosis was life and death. Here we are in 2024 and nothing has changed except we now have a surgeon under investigation, longer wait lists, more children waiting, a still not complete hospital, and funds not being spent as intended and no answers yet as to where the money *we* fought for went. You say you care but your actions have left us feeling anything but. We as a family also have a child facing open heart surgery next month and this is just more stress and concern that we do not need. Another summer has just passed and Harvey has spent the majority in his room, often needing to go back in to bed because he is in so much pain. Is that the life you think the children of Ireland deserve? Would you accept that if it was your own child? Can you imagine being told your child has a potentially life threatening condition but that it will be years before it would be treated? We need actual action, not more empty promises. You need to engage with all advocacy groups, not just those that are currently working with the task force. There are very valid reasons why the other groups have chosen to not engage and they need to be heard. We need contact details and open dialogue with the task force so that we can actually feel its existence. We need answers as to where the funding for scoliosis and spina bifida services went. Most of all, these children need to get their quality of life back before their whole childhood passes. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards. Gillian Sherratt

The Catholic Church has been consistently AGAINST divorce and separation for 2000 years. Marriage is not a wedding day, it is a death. The death of the isolated self. The death of the idea that your life belongs only to you. Before God, two people walk forward and allow themselves to be bound together, not with flowers or words, but with sacrifice. The same love that held Christ on the Cross was not soft. Iron tore through flesh and pinned Him to the wood, and He did not pull away. That is the image people do not want to see when they talk about love. Love costs blood. Love costs pride. Love costs the part of you that wants to run when things hurt. When a man and a woman become one flesh, it is not sentimental language. It is a joining that says, your suffering is now mine, your burdens are now mine, your future is now mine. You do not stand beside each other as spectators. You are fastened together and sent into battle. The world you raise children in will not be gentle. It will test you, divide you, try to convince you that commitment is a mistake and sacrifice is weakness. Marriage answers that lie with defiance. You stay. You endure. You forgive when it would be easier to walk away. You carry each other when one collapses. The vows are not promises made for the good days. They are spoken for the nights when everything feels broken and you choose each other anyway. This is why marriage is sacred. Not because it is easy, but because it mirrors something eternal. Christ did not abandon His bride when she failed Him. He stayed nailed there. So when you stand before God and bind your life to another, understand what you are stepping into. You are choosing covenant over comfort. You are choosing unity over ego. Catholic Weddings are auraful.

Hills I will die on as someone who has coached high school football for over 29 years: 1. If you are not PASSIONATE about blessing, serving, and empowering those you are blessed to coach, this profession is not for you. 2. As much as we need to know our trade, getting to know (and to love), our players is far more important. 3. This is an INTENSE game, and it’ll never be “just a game”, but it IS a game. Remember that when you’re with your team, and more importantly, remember that when you’re with your family. 4. Just as we teach our athletes to “leave things better than they found them”, we need to leave our athletes better than they were when they first entered into our program. Never let a day pass without pouring into each and every individual. 5. Life is complicated enough, let’s not complicate the game in such a way that we take the joy of it away from others. In other words… Keep it simple. 6. Our words carry little (or NO), value, if we don’t practice what we preach. WE as coaches should be learning and growing each and every day, just as we expect our athletes to. 7. As much as we all want to win those championship rings for our athletes, make sure you don’t lose your wedding ring in the process. 8. The athlete that may be “difficult to reach/teach” (the one who may get on your last nerve more than you could ever imagine), is someone’s EVERYTHING. Get to know them as human beings, find out what motivates them, and do everything you can to help them to thrive. 9. Be where your feet are. Don’t fall into the trap of chasing logos and thinking that a higher division, a bigger school, or going from HS to college, or even college to the pros, is going to be more rewarding or fulfilling. 10. The legacy you leave as a coach will never be determined by your wins and losses, but by the lives you were able to change for the better!

Your baby thrives on predictability. Specifically, yours. This week I’ve been talking about attachment, which holds long lasting consequences for your child’s mental and physical health (not to mention their cognitive development). Secure attachments in infancy occur when parents’ interactions with their babies are: Warm. Responsive. Safe. And consistently so. I’ve shared lots of important tips in the past. Tips on reading to your child. Tips on play. Tips on language development. But I want to be clear that attachment has nothing to do with the number of toys or books in your home. Or how well you interact most of the time. Attachment is a product of your predictability. It’s how you interact EVERY time. It’s what you teach your child to expect from you as their caregiver. Inconsistency in the way adults interact with children - warm and responsive one day and potentially cold and distracted the next - is detrimental to secure attachment. When children don’t know what to expect from day to day, it creates anxiety. And this activates the body’s stress response systems. Continually. This is one reason that it’s so important for parents to thoughtfully manage their own stress, exhaustion, safety, and mental health needs. When you aren’t at your best for yourself, you likely won’t be at your best for your baby. As an aside, consistency is also why I’ve spoken out about viral social media trends that undermine trust and predictability by inserting chaotic behaviors into the parent-child relationship. Several months ago - if you can believe it - it was unexpectedly cracking open an egg on your child’s forehead. This week it seems to be throwing slices of American cheese at/onto your baby’s head/face. (I wish I was making this up.) While it’s easy for us as to dismiss such behaviors as jokes, to young children they are detrimental for precisely the reason some adults may find them funny: they’re unexpected. But when your otherwise kind and attentive parent randomly acts with callousness - if even for a moment - it breaks a stable pattern. It provides a new data point that suggests you may be warm and caring… but also may not be dependably. And this is precisely what undermines attachment. (The good news is that an otherwise stable attachment is unlikely to be permanently disrupted by one dumb mistake. We all make them. Still… don’t. Just don’t.) Be kind, be responsive, and do it predictably. I’ll never share the kind of videos I described above. In their place, enjoy this warm and secure interaction between storyoferica (IG) and her happy little one.

Dear Mr. President, Thank you for writing against the terrible, barbaric act of torture again, as you did in 2017 when many people were being tortured at the infamous Nalufenya detention center. Just in case you didn’t know, let me join many other Ugandans to bring it to your attention that so many more people have been tortured since then. I will list some of them but let me start with Sam Mugumya who was disappeared by security operatives a year ago and has never been released or charged in any court of law even when the courts ordered the state to investigate this matter. I also interviewed his 83 year old mother Ednansi Katungwesi who appealed to you to intervene and ensure that her son is taken to prison where she can visit him and ascertain that he is alive, if he committed any crime. Recently, a video of him surfaced and he has been visibly subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. He was tortured even worse than Nuwagaba (I say that because I interviewed Nuwagaba in 2024) and if Mugumya isn’t released to get the same treatment you offered to Nuwagaba, I am afraid he won’t survive. Many other Ugandans have been abducted and disappeared and held incommunicado and tortured. The reason suspects are not arrested in accordance with the law and held in gazetted detention is to torture them. Some of those that have been lucky to make it out have told this harrowing tales. Some haven’t been lucky because they have not been seen again for 7,6,5 years. As we speak, countless Ugandans are still held incommunicado including two very young people Christopher Gody (King Zale) and 18 year old William Baliza. Then there are others whose torture hasn’t even been hidden. Your son the CDF, has publicized it, e.g Eddie Mutwe, Erias Lukwago, etc. Just in case these had not been brought to your attention, I and many other Ugandans are bringing them to your attention. Otherwise Ugandans may think you only care about the torture of Nuwagaba who comes from Kiruhura where you also come from and not the plight of so many other parents like the 83 year old mother of Sam Mugumya and of these many other Ugandans that have been tortured. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.

I used to think it sounded a little silly when couples said, “We’re pregnant.” I’d say, “She’s pregnant—you’re just the husband showing up.” But now, I understand the importance of the “we.” Especially when pregnancy becomes challenging… or when it ends abruptly. A miscarriage tests not only the body but the heart, mind, and soul of both partners. It’s during these moments that the “we” truly matters. It becomes “we had a miscarriage,” and it becomes “we are healing.” Because a husband’s active role in his wife’s recovery is just as vital as her own healing process. Challenging times remind us that marriage is not equal tasks, equal responsibilities. Women, not men, bear children. On other hand, men are typically responsible for physical things: like protection or carrying your pregnant wife to the hospital when she’s having a miscarriage. It’s about giving what your partner needs, because you know they would do the same for you. To the husbands: when you show up during this time, it’s not just an act of kindness, it’s also an act of love that serves you both. The sooner she heals, the sooner you will both find your way back to creating the life of your dreams. 💛 A few reminders for husbands when their wives are pregnant: •Get her the supplements she needs, and remind her to take them (pregnancy and postpartum brain are real). •Encourage her to eat and stay hydrated. •Go with her to doctor’s appointments and take notes: she might not remember everything, and she needs your presence more than she’ll ever say. 🤍 Robert ₿reedlove
