This ABS system is going to break some umpires. Poor guy is 0-3 just 6 outs into the Red Sox / Pirates game.

Good, if you’re 0-3 this early in the game you should be replaced by the 3rd base ump

We don't need the theatrics or the announcements or any of that. This should take two seconds. It can't be like this.

Why can't the Ump just wear an earpiece. If it Beeps its a Strike. If no beep its a ball. We have the technology, we can make it better. The old ways need to change for the game to keep up and stay interesting.

It’s an umpire hunting balls instead of strikes. Hopefully these corrective actions in game will help him get better

They have to leave this unlimited. I’d rather a game get stopped 25 times to prove an umpire made the wrong call 20 times. This is the closest thing we have to legitimate accountability for officials in pro sports. Weed out the terrible umpires.

Just use technology and get rid of the old dudes behind the plate calling pitches. Humans aren’t smart enough for 2026 pitching…..

NESN kept blaming Andy Fletcher, who is umpiring 2nd base today..it’s even worse when you are not even the home plate umpire and still blamed!!

I'm waiting for an ump to make a dozen bad calls in the first inning and get so rattled they start ejecting players just for challenging.

How many challenges do you get? Is there a penalty if you’re wrong?

Get 2, but if you get it right, you keep it , so once you get 2x wrong, you're done until extras.

@MonocleMan1 It's crazy that they don't have the ABS calling the entire game. Leave the plate umpire there for other stuff so the traditionalists are appeased but have the ABS get every ball/strike right.

ABS is not calling the 3D strike zone. It's calling a generic measurement based on a middle of the plate 2D zone based on batter height. There will be many pitches this year that are strikes based on the MLB rulebook and a ball based on ABS and vice versa.

Because Umps are crooked and paid off, just like refs in pretty much every sport. NBA is probably the worst.

It needs to break some umpires. Poor calls ruin the quality of the sport.

MLB should relegate the bottom 10% of umpires to the minors and bring up the top 10% every single year.

So much for pace of play...this just puts the spotlight on umpires and interrupts the game. Either human umps should call balls and strikes or make it completely computerized.

Only problem with ABS I guess is the catcher did a poor job receiving that ball. It didn’t look like a strike watching the video.
