Goddessa was talking about how crazy, energetic and wild Ghanaians can be when they party. Her use of the word “mannerless” was not intended as an insult or a blanket statement about the character of Ghanaians. The conversation was about the way Ghanaians party and the energy they bring, not about calling Ghanaians bad-mannered people. Unfortunately, the conversation has been reduced to one statement and presented in a completely different light. That is why we are sharing the full clip so people can hear the conversation for themselves and understand the context in which those words were said. Nomy lost her mother when she was just 11 years old. Her mum was a single mum and the only parent that she knew. Experiencing grief at such a young age is not something that is easy to navigate, in fact you never fully heal from it. This is why she keeps to herself because she has had to navigate this world on her own. She has had disagreements with housemates and she has never insulted anyone so passionately. Saying anything about her mum is a trigger and calling her a motherless hoe is definitely something that she wouldn’t take lightly. Using the fact that someone has lost a parent as an insult is extremely painful. No one would react positively to that. All she wishes for is to see her mum again and coming at her because of her mum’s death is a big trigger. This is why she refused to open up, somehow the housemates got wind of the fact that her mum is not alive and want to use it against her. Let’s not rewrite conversations to manufacture a victim and a villain where there isn’t one. In this conversation Yusuf did not speak ill of Nommy. Not once. In fact, when Tram said, “I want to provoke her every day,” Yusuf immediately pointed out what that would do and he said "it will create a rivalry and people taking sides; and even identified it as a strategy" When Tram said, “I want her to run out of things to say,” Yusuf literally told him, “She will never run out of things to say.” He did not encourage the provocation. He did not insult Nommy. He did not plot against her. And when he was reporting what happened with the air freshener, he was recounting an incident that had already happened. That is not the same thing as plotting to provoke someone. You are absolutely entitled to defend your client. But, do not use her feelings as a licence to assassinate another person’s character, dragging Yusuf into a narrative where he is portrayed as one of three men deliberately plotting against her is simply dishonest. Look for pity in peace, but not at the expense of my client’s character. It is inevitable that such a monumental figure (Pt. Nehru) will have his life and work analysed and critiqued — and that is indeed as it should be. Although the temptation to divorce him from his times, the challenges he had to face, and to look at him devoid of the historical context in which he functioned has become quite widespread. Yet, while we welcome ongoing analysis of his contributions, what is not acceptable is the systematic attempt being made to denigrate, distort, demean, and defame him. The sole objective of this is not only to diminish him as a personality and undermine his universally recognised role in India's independence struggle and his leadership in the early decades of an independent nation grappling with unprecedented problems, but also to demolish his multifaceted legacy in a crude and self-serving attempt to rewrite history. Analysis is one thing, but deliberate mischief with what he said, what he wrote, and what he did is quite another — and totally unacceptable. And who are the forces that have launched this project? We all know that they have worked for years and years—for decades—and finally, here they are. They belong to an ideology that had no role whatsoever in our freedom movement, that had no role whatsoever in the making of our Constitution. In fact, they even burnt it and were totally against it. It is an ideology that long ago fanned an atmosphere of hate that ultimately led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi ji. His killers today continue to be glorified by its adherents. It is an ideology that has consistently rejected the ideals of our founding fathers. It is an ideology with a bigoted and viciously communal outlook. Its approach to nationhood is based on stoking prejudices of all kinds. Let there be no doubt whatsoever that the project to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru ji is the main objective of the ruling establishment today. Their goal is not just to erase him; it is actually to destroy the social, political, and economic foundations on which our nation has been founded and built. The road ahead is not easy. But there is simply no option but for each one of us, individually and collectively, to stand up and confront this project.
