(This case is alleged and ongoing) MeToo founder Tarana Burke explains why the Cornell 7 case has resonated so deeply with survivors, saying that you don’t have to have the exact same experience to recognize what it feels like to lose control over your body. The case centers on... allegations from a Cornell student identified as Jane Doe, who claims she was raped by seven Chi Phi fraternity members in 2024. After the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office initially declined to prosecute, the investigation was recently reopened, with New York Attorney General Letitia James appointed as special prosecutor. For survivors, Burke says, the response to Jane Doe’s story reflects the same recognition behind MeToo: “We know it in our bones, we know it in our spirits, in our bodies, we know it in our lived reality what this is.” Read the full essay here:show more

"I don't know Jane Doe, but I know plenty of women like Jane Doe who do feel unsafe at frat houses." Current students at Cornell University spoke about the case of a former Cornell University student who claims she was drugged and gang-raped for multiple hours inside a fraternity house in October 2024, as the case gains national attention. “Everyone deserves to know exactly what happened in 2024,” Cornell student body president Eeshaan Chaudhuri said. “We want to know exactly what happened that night to the best of the university’s ability.”

Two years after a former Cornell student says she was drugged, assaulted and gang-raped by 7 fraternity members, prosecutors are taking another look at the case. Jane Doe makes the allegations against seven members of Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity in a new civil lawsuit. The Tompkins County District Attorney says his office has now assigned an experienced sex-crimes prosecutor to prepare the case for a grand jury. If jurors vote to indict, the DA says his office will prosecute "to the fullest extent of the law." But an attorney for one of the accused is pushing back, saying the focus should be on whether the DA and Cornell "dropped the ball" two years ago, rather than attacking the students.

BREAKING: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul taps Attorney General Letitia James to serve as special prosecutor in the Cornell sexual assault case, taking the investigation out of the local district attorney's hands. "New reporting raises serious questions about the information his office relied upon when it made that decision," Hochul says, calling for a "fresh and thorough review of all the facts." James will now oversee the investigation into allegations that a former Cornell student was sexually assaulted by multiple men at a fraternity house in 2024. The original investigation closed without charges before the Tompkins County DA reopened it this week following new information in the woman's civil lawsuit. Hochul says James can prosecute offenses and present evidence to a grand jury if warranted.

The Jane Doe in the Cornell University case told campus police weeks after the alleged assault in 2024 that she can say "with 100% confidence I was raped," according to the transcript obtained by CBS News New York. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Tuesday that he never saw a transcript of a conversation between an alleged rape victim and investigators showing what she told campus police before his office decided not to bring charges. Cornell conducted an internal investigation into the alleged fraternity gang rape that occurred Oct. 19-20, 2024, and led to expulsions, suspensions and other sanctions. Criminal charges, however, were not pursued, and prosecutors have now reopened their criminal investigation. Lilia Luciano has more.

BREAKING: Gov. Kathy Hochul signs an executive order appointing Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell 7 case. "I've lost faith in the Tompkins County DA's ability to fairly oversee it." One day before her appointment, James said: "My heart goes out to the victim. The survivor. And I stand with her and all individuals who unfortunately have been the victims of sexual assault." "We look forward to the outcome and to ensure that justice is served and there's accountability for the survivor." Hochul says the appointment ensures the case will be handled "without conflict or bias."

Thousands of people gathered on Cornell University’s campus on Monday including students, faculty and members of the local Ithaca, New York community to protest the school’s response to an alleged gang rape at the Chi Phi fraternity in 2024. Cornell University President Michael I. Kotlikoff said in a video message posted online Saturday his school's administration "must do better" amid the criticism and fallout of its investigation into allegations made by a former student that she was gang-raped at a fraternity in 2024. He also said, "We must do everything we can to prevent what happened to Jane Doe and everyone before her and anyone after her from ever happening again."

“Mattress Girl” was my Jane Doe when I broke her story in 2013. She decided to come forward with her name and tell the world. 13 years later we reconnected and she told me she’s still paying for it. The Jane Doe in the Cornell 7 case had that anonymity ripped from her last week.

Sunny Hostin now walks back her previous defense of the Cornell 7. She says that if this was in D.C. when she was still a federal prosecutor she would take the case, and blames New York's intoxication law for it not being tackled sooner: "I always look at this as a former sex crimes prosecutor. In D.C. this case would have gone to trial. I would have prosecuted this case like I prosecuted a lot of sex crimes. The problem is the New York law. And this is a morally repugnant case. It is grotesque when you read the details, Ana, you are right. I feel terrible about how this happened, why do these kids -- why do they have ketamine? Why are they -- why is there no upstanding -- an upstander. You know, you want that. The young man to go upstairs and say, 'shut this down. What is going on?' You want more people to do that. But New York makes it incredibly impossible to prosecute a case like this. You would have to be unconscious or involuntarily drugged like slipped a drug in order to charge this case and that is why it wasn't charged in 2024. And I will tell you there are 19 other states that have this same law. 19 other states."

This is probably my most controversial episode to date. We keep hearing that Jane Doe’s behavior after the Cornell 7 incident was a “textbook trauma response.” But is that actually what the evidence shows? This is why we should all care what happens in this case. We see again, like in the Clancy case, how bad psychology is used to neutralize contradictory evidence and mobilize the legal system to cancel female agency. The controversial part is that I look at “unacknowledged rape,” and what studies of forcible rape victims actually show.

The smoking gun in the Cornell gang rape case is that Jane Doe told campus police she was raped, and they intentionally omitted this from the 6-page summary given to prosecutors: “I can say with 100% confidence that I was raped.” Omitting that statement is a full-blown cover-up by campus police to protect the rapists. Another smoking gun is that one of the fraternity brothers who was downstairs told campus police that he questioned whether it was consensual and was sorry for not stopping it: “I was sorry that if it wasn’t consensual and she was victimized, I was sorry for not stopping it.” Too many people jumped to conclusions in this case without reviewing the facts and the facts show Cornell campus police engaged in a cover up by failing to provide prosecutors with the victim’s own statement where she says she was raped.
