Over the weekend, I visited a friend in Dzivarasekwa (DZ) Extension in Harare & this is how the road looks like. Poignantly, the roads that used to be tarred & paved are now dust roads. Lakes have emerged in the midst of the roads. As motorists, when we are driving in the Ghettos of Harare, we are no longer driving on the left side of the road, but we are now driving on what's left of the road, that is if there is still anything left of the road at all. I was at Aba to inspect a couple of roads that are undergoing rehabilitation. I am happy with the progress of work, particularly at Cemetry Road. The contractor has also taken the initiative to desilt the drainage system, which demonstrates their commitment to ensuring a long-lasting and sustainable road infrastructure. It is worth noting that the rehabilitation efforts extend beyond Cemetry Road, with a total of nine roads currently undergoing partial and comprehensive rehabilitation. The final road layer is in progress and it is anticipated that the surfacing be completed by Friday 12 December 2025. The safety of the road users is the core priority and it is for this reason that the Roads and Transport will implement pre-markings and install temporary stop signs for the entire festive season as the road will be open for traffic soon. These include vehicle licence fees, tollgate fees on highways, carbon tax, and taxes from fuel. Every dollar spent at the fuel pump includes a portion that is supposed to go to road maintenance. This is a revenue stream close to a billion dollars every year. There is no shortage of money. Zimbabweans pay four different taxes just to own and use a car. The problem is that this money is looted. This is the money that should be fixing these roads. Instead, it is being stolen. They do not just steal the road tax money. They also steal from motorists again when people are forced to repair damage caused by this dilapidated road infrastructure, and then they congratulate the minister responsible with an award for it.
