Video from the Bhaniyawala–Rishikesh highway, where people have been protesting for days against the felling of more than 3,000 trees. For the people of Uttarakhand, this is not a new story. Every few years, another forest is marked for cutting. Local people come out to protect the trees. They tie raksha sutras, hug the trunks, file petitions and raise their voices. Then the debate fades, and another patch of forest disappears. This has happened before in Harshil, Khalanga, Almora, Corbett and many other places. The locations change. The story remains the same. For many people in Uttarakhand, this isn’t just about 3,000 trees. It is about watching the same fight being fought again and again.

If the Nigerian government, under President Tinubu, can spend even 20% of what is being spent on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on rehabilitating existing roads, we would not have as many bad roads as we have today. Look at the number of businesses suffering because transportation costs are so high due to bad roads. Food prices will continue to rise when farmers and businesses cannot easily transport their goods because there are no good roads. Imagine spending trillions of naira on a new road—reportedly billions of naira per kilometre—when there are already so many existing roads that could be rehabilitated to make life easier for Nigerians. But when you talk about it, they will come after you. Anyway, Nigerians, it is up to you now. The choice is yours.

Loshgyani village near Bhimtal has been waiting for a road for years. When villagers built one themselves, the administration came and stopped them. We have all seen the videos from this village. Sick people being carried on dandi-kandi through the mountains. No road. No option. Just human hands and steep hills. So the people decided to act. Women, elders, youth. Everyone pitched in with their own labour and their own money. No demands. No protests. Just work. Officials arrived and shut it down. These are the same officers who do not stop builders from cutting roads to resorts and hotels across Uttarakhand. But villagers trying to reach a hospital? Stopped. The village has had enough. If no decision comes by June 20, they will pick up their tools again on June 21 and resume work themselves. A patient carried on shoulders in 2026 is not a development story. It is a failure of the system.

And now, if New Yorkers want a leader like the governor that we have, who can look at that cruelty and name it for what it is, then they know that the choice is Governor Hochul.
