This PhD student looked at an old 2013 LiDAR dataset of Mexico and found a lost Mayan city that no one even knew existed 🤯 We're talking 6000+ buildings complete with pyramids and palaces, all hidden under dense jungle canopy. The neat thing about LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) as a sensing system is that you get multiple returns, allowing you to penetrate vegetation canopies in dense jungles. Now as aerial LiDAR surveys expand using drones and fixed wing planes, we're literally discovering lost cities by throwing virtual darts at the map. Other datasets are sitting in silos just waiting to be analyzed. This shouldn't be too surprising, because while we might have a decent fused "picture" of the entire world with Google Earth, we don't really have global scale LiDAR maps -- really only select areas of interest across the globe. Yes, we have Google Street View for all the drivable (and even walkable) parts of the world, but most of the world has never been mapped in high detail. As a result, people still discover ancient ruins in the wild -- crazy findings that make us rethink our history. Pretty wild if you ask me, and motivates the rather timeless mission of creating a 1:1 digital twin of the entire planet -- not just places with users :-)

Here is an open-source tool to generate a complete dataset. 1. Describe the data you want 2. An orchestrator agent searches the web 3. Sub-agents run in parallel to fetch the data 4. You get a structured dataset you can download For example, you can run Bigset with the query "all leica lenses being sold on amazon", or "leica stores in kyoto with their opening hours and ratings". Bigset uses TinyFish's free Search and Fetch APIs in the background. You can configure it to refresh the data on a schedule. You can self-host it with your own keys.
