This guy is over it with all the unnecessary apps and “smart” everything. He bought a light bulb that wants him to download an app just to turn it on. Then he goes off about appliances that beep like they just landed on the moon, fridges with iPad screens,... and how ridiculous passwords have gotten. He’s basically saying we’ve overcomplicated everything for no reason. A lot of people are feeling this way lately. Give me a dumb appliance that lasts for 30 years.

I was talking to a new coworker last week and I mentioned I like biking. He asked if I had an e-bike, and I said 'no, just an analog bike, the kind I pedal'. Then that later got me thinking about what life was like in an analog world of the 70s/80s. When people could change their own oil, fix their own appliances, the only time you used the phone was when you were home because it was attached to the wall, when the phone rang, you had no idea who it might be, if you wanted to watch a particular TV show, you HAD to be home when it aired, want to see a new movie, you HAD to go to the theater, if something happened halfway around the world, you might not hear about it for days, or at all, want to send a message, you'd have to write it down with pen and paper... But yeah, the more things we have to 'make our lives easier' just made it more and more complex.

And the appliances only last maybe 5 years at most. I have 27 year old fridge, stove, furnace, water heater. All working perfectly. 10 years ago some dude told me I needed a new furnace and water heater b/c they could blow up any day!! LOL still working!! This new shit purposely is made crappy so you have to replace it. I do not need a fridge that tells me when to go buy milk!! Shove the smart everything!!

I totally agree. My rant is on kids all over that can't ride a regular bike anymore. It's all ebikes, escooters, and small motor bikes. They're on my sidewalks, trails. Why can't kids just peddle a bike? Have we just gone overboard enabling kids?

I've gotten to where if something requires an app, I'll send it back. I don't want it.

Completely out of control, I am debating putting together a business plan for a dumb car, 2.4L, rear wheel drive, all manual, truck and sedan. Simple. No stupid apps or micro transactions. The pendulum swings.

There is massive opportunity for a company to build simple machines, appliances, and vehicles that are easily repairable, zero high tech bullshit. Just old school simple design. Durable and affordable.

Huge opportunity for American manufacturer to make a product that is rock solid, simple, and repairable. Applies to cars, home appliances, tools . . .

probably has to subscribe to the app too pay a monthly fee to turn on that bulb. you know that good old electric bill isn't enough of a fee, they want more nickel and diming everyone.

He’d have a point if there weren’t a ton of appliances without all that. You can just buy regular light bulbs and fridges.

This is exactly what happened to high technology civilizations that collapsed in the past. Every single thing that people need to survive is dependent upon that technology. When that technology finally reaches a point of "singularity", and collapses, nobody can survive because nobody knows how to do anything manually. In addition, younger generations that grow up knowing nothing but technology as a means of survival, have no way to survive because they never learned how to do anything manually. The further away man gets from engaging one on one with nature to survive, the higher the likelihood of that civilization collapsing. That is my theory, anyway.

Out of control and so annoying. They did it on purpose all to spy for both consumer trolling and big brothers that are useless right now.

He's not being a grump. He's right. A light bulb should turn on with a switch. A fridge should keep food cold. The industry put chips and apps in everything not because it helps you but because connected devices collect data and lock you in. I fix these for a living. The smart ones break more, cost more, and die when the company drops the software. We didn't overcomplicate things by accident. Somebody profits from every app you're forced to download.

They still sell plenty of light bulbs that don't require an app. Tell him to stop crying like a little girl over it. 🙄

I'd imagine for things like fridges, washers/dryers and more, that major manufacturers could build and advertise stripped down/no electronics/no chips versions and if they were priced accordingly, they'd sell like hot cakes.

Yeah, I have a new Whirlpool washing machine, that lost a computer board 2 months out of warranty. Waiting list to get the new board. I'm looking for a working old wringer machine to replace it. No sensors, just a timer. If the timer goes. Wire it out and put a on/off switch.

But, isn't adding all the technology just an excuse to charge more for the product? A new dishwasher or refrig used to cost $100-$200.
