This guy is voicing the opinion of a lot of comic fans.

They take the concept of 'writing from personal experiences' way too far. Writing a self insert when the character has their own personality and way of doing things firmly established, only serves to destroy the original and kills any interest in the ip.

Grab an action figure of a super hero. As you play with it, do you imagine the figurine acting as the hero it portrays, or as yourself playing as the hero? If the former, cool. If the latter, you probably wouldn’t be the best choice writing for an established hero comics.

In Japanese Manga - Most protagonists are the "everyman" (a regular guy/gal) who is thrust into a Hero/Villain situation w/ nothing but their wits or humanity and they slowly grind (trial & error) up to become a Hero. It's a journey and we go with them & learn lessons.

They also don’t care if they fail… because it gives them what they wanted to begin with. More reason to hate the once thriving comic book industry they never loved to begin with.
