This IKEA hack turned out so good it actually looks like custom built-ins. She took regular bookshelves and completely transformed them by focusing on the details most people skip — removing baseboards, working around outlets, securing everything properly, and finishing it off with crown molding. The end result is...

This is how ours turned out. Used @IKEA bookcases. We removed the baseboards and did crown moulding, also trim in between bookcases. It turned out amazing!

Ugh. as an owner of these exact IKEA shelves, they are cheap AF. the back is simply a cheap thin board that gets dents easily. if you lose the pegs for the shelves. you are out of luck. plus complete dust traps. i’m actively trying to give away a set now.

Loosing a tooth is not traumatic. What is traumatic is growing up in a house where the mother is addicted to vanity and internet clicks

Good quality wood lasts more than a lifetime. In this age of cheaply made and terrible quality, visit antique shops or secondhand shops and scoop up treasures that are abandoned in estate clearouts. They'll be lifelong friends.

The trick to a good ikea hack is to have your husband stand out of frame so he can show you what to do first then you follow up and make it look like you did it all ! 🙄

it's still cheap melamine crap that will bend soon. she'd have been better off buying pine boards & learning how to cut them & build it herself.

Easier and cleaner to take a fillet out of the upright sections on the back of the shelves instead of removing the skirting boards

It is impossible to just spraypaint a white laminated IKEA bookcase in one time. Applying the paint takes a lot of preparation.

All those shelves will bend down in a couple years, they are too thin.

the baseboard and crown molding details are what separate a hack from a build.

That’s the part people usually underestimate. The bookcases are the easy part — removing baseboards, securing everything properly, and adding trim are what make it read like built-ins instead of furniture lined up against a wall.

I like how she shows her mistakes - failure is giving up, not making mistakes. I constantly make them, take it apart and start over.

I solved building decks with AI agents — by giving them a CLI tool like Powerpoint or Google Slides. AI could already make a beautiful deck if you asked it to using Ant's pptx skill. The problem was working with it. If it made one alignment mistake, fixing it on one slide would break something on another, and it became a game of whack-a-mole. One time I spent two days playing AI roulette, hoping the next prompt would finally fix the thing, and ended up building the whole deck by hand because I was on a deadline. So I built Hands-on Deck. And the reason it works is that this isn't just a skill — this is PowerPoint. The actual application: PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, whatever you use. This is that, but for an agent, presented as a CLI. Every gesture you make in a deck app maps to a command. Click a box and type, drag a shape from here to there, look at a slide – agent can do it all in a command. And that changes how the agent behaves. With this CLI it works and thinks like a designer — it looks, makes an edit, looks again, makes another surgical edit. Compare that to Anthropic's pptx skill, built on the idea that Claude is a great programmer: it literally writes code to manipulate the deck, hand-editing XML and hoping it doesn't break anything else in the middle. The real test isn't creating something once — it's whether it can make surgical edits like you want. That's what I did in this video walkthrough and my claude crushed it! Check it out for yourself. So decks can be built like a designer now — with real flavor and taste. If you spend hours every week on decks, this gives those hours back. You can install it as a skill in Claude Code, Codex, whatever you use. Works every harness that supports skills. Let me know if you make something cool with it.
