This is happening in ALL BLUE STATES: On the early morning of July 13, 2026 (around 2:45 a.m.), off-duty Bridgeport PD Officer Cooper Whiteside, 38, and his girlfriend Brittany Islami, 34 (a mother of three), were killed in a head-on crash on Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury. They were on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a Jeep Compass driven by Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero (also referred to as Melissa Ramirez), 27, of Stamford, crossed the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and struck them. Both died at the scene from blunt-force trauma. Ramirez-Romero was later charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, DUI, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane. Her blood alcohol content was 0.14 (nearly twice the legal limit), and she tested positive for cannabis. She claimed she had finished a long shift and stopped to visit a friend; a spilled Corona was noted in the vehicle. DHS/ICE confirmed she is a criminal illegal alien (from Mexico) and lodged a detainer against her on or about July 26. Bond was initially set high ($500k range) with flight-risk and immigration concerns raised by prosecutors; there has been ongoing coverage and debate around licensing claims, identity confusion with similarly named individuals, and whether Connecticut’s policies would honor the detainer. Whiteside was a Danbury native who had wanted to be a cop since childhood, graduated high in his academy class, and had about two years on the Bridgeport force. @GovNedLamont murdered these two beautiful lives
