The narrative about data centers that were built in Virginia 20 years ago, they were old technology. They used a lot of water, they were very noisy, they created a lot of heat. But like every other technology, it's advanced dramatically. Today, we don't use a lot of water in data centers because it's a closed loop system like your car, your radiator. It stays inside a system. Many turbines now don't use water at all, they’re air-cooled. This narrative about data centers destroying the environment is an old story, and it's being used by those that don't wanna see this advance. We just need more capacity. We have to build it more responsibly, and that's exactly what's going on now. So this narrative is mostly a falsehood. And I think I know who's spreading this falsehood by the way. They're not our friends.

"Golf courses in Arizona use ~30X as much water as all data centers in Arizona. Best I can tell, data centers are generating ~50X as much revenue per gallon used. So, if I could close all golf courses in Arizona and replace them with data centers ... that would generate billions of dollars in revenue, without increasing water bills. I'm from a not super well-off area that is left behind by industry. I would be excited if a medium-sized data center were built in the vicinity that the town could then tax. A $500 billion project called Stargate the largest AI complex and they spend $500 billion on that instead of helping Americans get back on their feet. OK we see you. We see where your priorities live and it’s not in the American people. But you go ahead and waste $500 billion on a AI project that is going to deplete our water and a lot of other materials and limit jobs but it’s the future of America. I better shut up. I am not suicidal by the way. I just love my country and hate AI data centers because they ruined places. And make a lot less jobs.👍🏻👍🏻

When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

It's amazing in a bad way how much electricity is projected for the AI folks to use, and a significant amount of electricity these AI centers are using is serving ChatGPT users in places like India and China."

This is a boat ramp that has not seen water for years” Cheyenne Wyoming is about 20 miles away and Meta, Microsoft, and other major companies have Data Centers facilities or expansions There are 8 more planned projects statewide adding significant water and electricity usage Now there aren’t any data centers I couldn’t find by Crooked Creek so it’s mainly drought and low rainfall here, but the entire surrounding area is in a drought. Not a good time to keep adding data centers

I do think that data centers either ought to bring their own power with them or pay the incremental costs that they impose on the grid. I don’t think ratepayers should be subsidizing the power that they use. So that’s where I am.
