Rare earth metals are not rare. The issue is the smelters and refineries to make the finished rare earth metals from the raw ore. It has been impossible for over 40 years to build these types of industries in Europe, the USA or anywhere except China. So China built them and now it doesn’t matter where the ore is, 90% of the refineries and smelters are in China so the raw ore has to go to China. So China controls the finished rare earth metals. The west over regulated and gave away a strategic industry.

JOE: We've been talking about China on and off for over 20 years, and their imbalances. This week the President declared trade war on them, effectively, with 125% tariffs as of now; it'll probably change in the next few days. What do you think of the trade and tariff policy? What's gonna happen? Bond yields sold off more than I expected. The yields went higher than I expected so far. What's going on? PETER: I'm hesitant to comment since obviously it's a very, very fluid situation, but something like the sort of reset that they're talking about now seems where we're going, where you need a very drastic reset with China. In theory you need to reset with other people, but what we really need to get them to do is also reset things with China. I think the rough numbers are that about a quarter of the US trade deficit is bilaterally with China, but another quarter is indirectly with China. So China is sort of half the problem... And then China is the geopolitical rival. So there's a way in which people in Mercedes in Germany are selling cars to the US. We might want to have those pretty well paying jobs in the US and, and not in Germany. And there are all kinds of sort of mercantilist policies that at the margins Germany engages in. But, you know, it's probably not gonna repurpose the Mercedes factory to build tanks to invade the US or something like this. Whereas this sort of dual use problem is the problem with China. ...There are ways the economic relationship with China is fairly efficient.... if people are working for a dollar and a half an hour in a Foxconn factory, we don't really want to get those jobs in Wisconsin. But it is this geopolitical rivalry where... you have to somehow factor in that the economists never are able to factor in properly with China. I'm not sure I would call this the optimistic plan, but the reset in trade that seems desirable to me would be that we radically changed the relationship with China and we sort of induce a lot of other countries to radically change their relationship with China. And that's how we, you know, maybe that's how we build a stronger western alliance of the free world. JOE: Well there's going to be some interesting negotiations in the next few months. Did you think that we could bring, maybe using AI, some more advanced manufacturing here that was in China? Is that a real thing the next decade to do a bunch more here, thanks to our more efficiencies and productivity? PETER: There's probably always a decent amount of things like that. You have to always be extremely granular on how expensive the robots are, how expensive the equipment is, because in some sense, manufacturing has been getting steadily more automated for 250 years. And you've had the machines that make the machines. The machines that make the machines are getting sort of smarter and more complicated. And there are ways in which AI is a quantum leap. There's a way in which it's just, you know, a natural continuation of this, you know, two century long process. I think there are some parts that can be moved to the US with AI. Maybe also if you change some of the environmental rules and some of the other anti-industrial policies we have in the US. But then if parts of this are moved to other emerging market countries. Vietnam is a communist country. It has bad mercantilist policies, but it's not planning to take over the world. And so at the margins, if we can move things from China to Vietnam, that's a big win.

This is definitely one of the more interesting restaurant experiences I've had in China! It's a place called "Hong Men Yu Yan" (literally "red door royal banquet") in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. And the concept is that you basically fully step back in imperial China, including guests who need to arrive 1hr in advance to dress up (I chose to be a Ming dynasty scholar, why not? 😋). The service is extraordinary, truly Chinese imperial style with a 17-course meal that includes some of the most delicate classics of Chinese cuisine (like "Buddha jumps over the wall"). Another very unique aspect of the experience is we guests were made actors in a "play" before the meal, where we had to play games and interact with the actual actors to solve some "mysteries" so we could earn ancient Chinese money that we could exchange for presents. Honestly really cool experience. If you're ever in Harbin you need to try this!

This is quite funny: at the bottom of the ski slopes in China you have SF Express booths (the most famous courier in China). Why? When they travel to ski here people send their ski equipment separately, and find them back at the bottom of the slopes. And when they're done skiing they send their equipment back home from the bottom of the slopes! One of the advantages of having an ultra-reliable and efficient delivery infrastructure is that you can do stuff like this.

You have New York State already banning it in education. This is insane. Public schools in New York are not allowing AI. They're not even in any kind of school in New York. This is really cool. You may think that giant pandas are the most protected animals in China but there is even rarer: this specific type of salamander 👇 that lives only in a few river streams on the border between China and Kazakhstan. It's called the Xinjiang Northern Salamander, and it's a 350 million years old species that was only discovered in 1989. They're so precious that their natural habitat has been completely sealed off: it's called the "Wenquan County National Nature Reserve" and no-one is authorized to enter. You can however see some of them in a local research center on the species - where we now are - in Wenquan (温泉) town.

This is the first stage. We are now in a situation where it's 10 and 10 plus 20 for fentanyl, so 30% tariffs in the US of China goods coming in, and they can get rid of 20% of it if they solve the fentanyl problem. That they will do with certainty. But we’re not finished there and neither are millions of small entrepreneurs in America that I represent. We need IP law to be finally put into place so that our products and services are protected in their markets the way we protect theirs and ours. So, reciprocal playing field is where we need to go. This is a great first step but it's only the beginning. I want to sell to the Chinese people. I have no problem with them. I have a big problem with their government. They don't abide by the rules. We've known that for a long time and no admin has dealt with China, even after they came into the World Trade Organization in 2000. They've breached every covenant of that agreement so it's important for us to set the tone in terms of how we're going to go forward with China.
