I shot this video while we were stuck on the highway in Waco during the flooding. I was very concerned that the retaining wall wasn’t going to hold up and we would all just be stuck. I shot this video when the first responders sowed up. But we were literally stuck. There was water in front of us water to the left water to the right and cars behind us. Best evening of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip so far: I think a good claim could be made we are as close as you can possibly get to the Garden of Eden on this Earth. We drove the RV for 7 hours to arrive in an amazingly charming little town called Wenquan (温泉), which literally means "hot spring," right on China's border with Kazakhstan. It's called this because (the smartest among you will have guessed it 😋) this place has natural hot springs, which is the central feature of the town: as you can see on the videos 👇there's a stunning hot spring lake packed with migratory birds where people can dip their feet in the water. And, this is where you'll get the Garden of Eden reference, this place is where apples originally come from! All the apple trees worldwide descend from a tree species native to this area - the Malus Sieversii. So, natural hot springs, wild birds, and the original apple tree - I don't know, rings a bell to me... Another fascinating fact about this place: it's mostly inhabited not by Han Chinese, nor Uyghurs, nor even Kazakhs but by Mongols! If you walk around town you'll see all the street signs are written in the Mongol script. In fact we're in a wider county called the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture (博尔塔拉蒙古自治州). Why is that? It's because in the 1760s, Qing dynasty emperor Qianlong needed loyal troops to protect the border right here so he sent a group of around 2,000 Chahar Mongol soldiers and their families all the way from near Beijing to settle here permanently. 260 years later, and their descendants are still here, and many of them actually still guarding the border! Quite literally multi-centennial commitment to duty. And, if that wasn't enough, we also had our best meal of the trip by far in this place, see next tweet 👇

This is really cool. You may think that giant pandas are the most protected animals in China but there is even rarer: this specific type of salamander 👇 that lives only in a few river streams on the border between China and Kazakhstan. It's called the Xinjiang Northern Salamander, and it's a 350 million years old species that was only discovered in 1989. They're so precious that their natural habitat has been completely sealed off: it's called the "Wenquan County National Nature Reserve" and no-one is authorized to enter. You can however see some of them in a local research center on the species - where we now are - in Wenquan (温泉) town.

Our very own Brandon Lake performed in Arizona, leading worship at the memorial for Charlie Kirk, declaring: “Can we acknowledge that the presence of God is in this place?” Brandon is part of Seacoast Church, the same church that brought me back to my faith. We stand strong together, firm in the hope of Christ. This is more than a moment, it’s a movement of revival in the church. Charlie Kirk lit the flame. We will carry the torch forward.

This may come as a shock to a lot of people… but this woman and her family intentionally flood their entire backyard to water their trees and grass. It’s called flood irrigation — they literally let the whole yard fill up with water on purpose. She walks through and shows just how full it gets, and says people are always surprised this is how they do it. The water is untreated canal water (not city drinking water) that’s specifically allocated for this purpose. Have you ever seen (or used) flood irrigation like this? I've never seen or heard of this before.

There's a fish called the Smelt and we have far more fresh water runoff into the ocean than we should on the theory that it helps this one little fish that likes this fresh/salt water mix. But there's no evidence of this. So we should have more fresh water. This is just an example, but we would have saved a lot of trouble if we had done that."
