How many families can we provide shelter to in Gaza before the next rainstorm? Donate now: This week you allowed us to provide shelter to 300 people (40 tents) and we will hopefully buy more in the next couple of days. But this is a drop in the ocean from whats needed. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza don’t have adequate shelter or winter necessities. Tents cost around $300 right now and also shoes, blankets and sweatsuits are entering in small amounts through commercial trucks. This elderly couple is struggling with the cold weather in Gaza, and lack of support. Both the elderly and their daughter can’t walk and are wheelchair users. The Sameer Project contacted the family to check what they need and on December 17th, we visited them in Khan Younis and provided 2 mattresses, 2 blankets and a large tarp. The total cost with 9% commission was $172. Blankets and tarps are in huge demand now with the strong cold and constant rain. Schools have turned into shelters for the displaced in Gaza and even those are often bombed, donate: Not a single place in Gaza is safe and there’s no such thing as a safe zone. 2,540 meals of rice were distributed by the Sameer Project on August 6th feeding around 7,620 people. Total cost was $14,345 with 11% commission. 600 meals were given to the school shelter in Nuseirat and surrounding camps and more meals were given to camps in Deir El Balah. The civil defense team gets their 40 daily rice meals as well. Children and babies with heart conditions - this is what happens when the healthcare system is destroyed, they have no proper nutrition, chemical weapons are used, and the stress of simply surviving wears on the body. The people that are fleeing South are doing so after nearly 2 years of hardship and suffering. Nearly 24 months of a destroyed medical system unable to provide for the sick. After eating canned goods, no protein, spoiled and rotten food. Their health failing and their nutrition can hardly sustain them through the journey. While families from different corners around the world gather for feasts and exchanging gifts, families in Gaza are trying to survive, help here: Even basic shelter is a dream in Gaza today as borders let ZERO building materials or caravans in. The Sameer Project is working with extremely limited resources trying to support Palestinians in Gaza. This video is of a family in the Refaat Alareer Camp whose tent collapsed on them during a rainstorm. This family of four kids lost their mom who was murdered by the military occupation, and shortly after that lost their grandfather. In Islam, as in many religions and cultures, rain is something we pray for, it’s a symbol of life - an essential need, leading to bountiful growth, mercy after barrenness, purification, new beginnings, hope. But in Gaza, families have been terrified of this moment, praying that the rain holds off. Makeshift tents and destroyed open structures will not make it through a winter storm. Images are already coming in showing flooded streets, torn tents, children running barefoot through the storm surge of waste and garbage. Now is the time to act. The children of Refaat Alareer are having a horrendous day with the sounds of bombs nearby. We pray for their safety and the safety of everyone in Gaza with this intense escalation. Support us here: Two weeks ago, the children of Refaat Alareer camp planted some mint and basil in the camp as a way to grow their own food. They also planted a significant amount of molokhya, traditional Palestinian plant that’s turned into a stew. Farming is one of the ways people are trying to survive the famine imposed by the military occupation. Bombings specifically target farmland to intensify the famine and deprive people from vegetables. No tents have entered Gaza since the so called “ceasefire” support: People in Gaza are panicking as winter is coming - which brings the rain, the wind, the cold temperatures. These makeshift tents don’t stand a chance, and there are so many more of them this year after 12 months of more displacements. The Tuyoor Muhajera (Migratory Bird) Camp in Al Mawasi Khan Younis is one of the largest, the poorest, the most at risk camps we have seen. It gets very little aid and support. Families know that come winter they are in trouble. We cannot wait until then, until it is too late to help. They need tents, they need tarps, they need mattresses, and blankets. Tents have come down in price from about $1,200 a few weeks ago to a little more than $400 now. This means that your donations help more families. With the amount we would spent on one family, we can now help three! This should encourage you to continue to give and reach more people in need. It never ceases to amaze us how much families in Gaza make with so little. But they are tired, they don’t want to be placed on a pedestal and exalted for their strength and steadfastness. They should not have to be this resilient, they should not have to be this tough just so barely survive. We have to do more. Our wonderful community supports, but the world is failing Gaza. This mother who lives at the Tuyoor Muhajera or Migrant Bird Camp in Khan Younis, the smile on her face, because she is happy when a bag of fruit is provided?? She shows a small single pencil, warn down to the stub, that all her children use for their studies. Is this what the world deems ok? It’s not sufficient and we must do more. We have to lift the onus of being strong and resilient off the tired shoulders of our brothers and sisters in Gaza and bear the burden for them, not in charity but in solidarity. The occupation is bombing and sniping patients at one of the last remaining hospitals in the North, one that was filled with cancer patients, patients that just had complex orthopedic surgeries, babies in incubators. The Sameer Project is trying to mobilize transportation, but for now the sick and the injured are fleeing with their families - no shelter, no mattresses, no food or water, and of course no continued medical care. Yet even worse, there are patients that remain trapped and unable to more. In the Shuja’iya neighborhood of southeast Gaza City, everything is destroyed, It was one of the largest neighborhoods in Gaza, and now it’s covered in dust, cinderblocks, twisted metal, and dirt. But for family’s like Mohammed’s there is no other option but to turn rubble mounds into something they can live on. This is the situation for most family’s in Shuja’iya and other parts of Northern Gaza. They have no where else to go, they have been working day and night to clear space that is considered barely habitable. Young ones don’t have the tools or words to express their feelings. Donate here: Creating safe spaces for children and teenagers to express themselves literally saves lives right now. Just like water and food are crucial for survival, so is mental health! The Sameer Project camps have counselors that provide art therapy, animal therapy, and music therapy. We also got a somatic healer who started doing somatic sessions with our teenagers. And of course we have our partners at Techmed Gaza who provide mental health services to our camps. Innocence meets youthful ignorance, unaware of the serious repercussions and problems this first storm would bring. It was a heavy and pounding storm, ushering the Winter months in with a bang. This year, everyone in Gaza was praying the rain would be delayed, hold off until the promised shelter entered the Strip, but unfortunately that was not the case. The rain fell, hard, and with it makeshift shelter were swept away in the winds, families were soaked, food supplies kept in the tents ruined, and more loss incurred. We ran out of words to describe how horrible things are in Gaza. From food to water to shelter, the needs are endless. Do you like their haircuts!? In the ruins of a blown out building in the North, the children of Gaza breathe life into a place that others attempted to demolish. They experience a moment of normalcy, getting haircuts, amidst the destruction. This small but important initiative always brings dignity and care to the kids who get a trim. Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project brought our Mobile Barber point to al-Trukman camp Al Jawazat area, West of Gaza City. Aid is political. The aid entering Gaza right now is humiliating, injuring and killing Palestinians. Whether it’s air drops or through GHF, the result is murder and minimal food reaching people. Additionally, whatever few trucks coming in are being looted with the support of the military occupation ensuring that the food doesn’t reach the people. The markets remain empty despite the propaganda of aid flowing in. This woman like many other mothers in the strip can’t find diapers or detergent to wash her children’s clothes.
