It’s true! After breakfast, kids were kicked out of the house. You only came in to eat lunch — then got sent right back out until dinner. With all the things governments now use to scare society, it’s amazing we survived at all.

One example of why our GenX will always be tougher than those who came after us.

House was literally locked up from 6:45 AM to 6:00 PM unless you had a stay at home mom. You had to be friends with someone whose parents were married so you had a place to take a shít from the time school let out and your mom got home.

We only stayed inside the house during the day if we had the chicken pox, measles, or broke some bone.

It's so true. You gotta find the video of the guy talking about how we all had the same exact childhood. It is so dead on from our bikes to the toys and the shows we all watched. It makes you feel like we were all just copied and pasted.

Even if “sink” was an option, we wouldn’t go inside unless it was a severe crisis. Our parents would say things like, “Now that you’re here, finish up this chore,” “You ruined this with your dirty hands/feet,” or “Playtime over… go wash up.” These things were enough to ruin our day. So, no, the sink was off limits… playtime on the streets trumped everything else.

I didn't get "kicked" out of the house, I just went outside to play. It was easier to use the hose to get a drink than to go back inside to get a drink. It was usually hot water, but that was ok. Really, what kind of parents would kick their kids out of the house every day during summer vacation, I'm assuming. We chose to go outside. Sometimes we stayed inside and played in the basement where we had a corner set up how we liked it, but we were never kicked out of the house. Can't fathom that.....

It’s funny, but I don’t understand the anger. It was a great childhood. I have real friends. I learned self reliance. I had to work while in high school. My first job was when I was 15 as a dishwasher working for $1 an hour at a country club. My parents made me give them 25% of my salary for room and board. With the balance I paid for a school trip to Spain. I bought my first car, a brand new Pontiac Astre for cash, before graduating high school. BTW on my wedding day, my parents as part of their present gave me a check for every penny that I paid them for “room and board”. My parents were awesome and taught me about life.

It was either the garden hose or you slammed your face in a stream to get a drink. No cup, no hand sanitizer, just rinse your hands in the same water you're gonna drink from. We didn't bring water bottles, we didn't bring flavored packets for the water to make it taste better… just flavored by nature, deer piss and all.

I could go in the house and drink from the sink if I wanted to stay in the house lol it was either in or out

In the 80's we played outside until the sun went down, no contact with parents. We explored MILES away from home. We wore denim pants and jackets to shoot bb guns at each other, "play Vietnam". And yes, we drank from the garden hose.

Think im older than her ( 53) and yes we drank out of the hose, never wanted to come back inside the house during summer and rode our bikes 25 miles a day on the most dangerous roads. All these youngsters are mushy and entitled brats.

We were told to be home when the street lights came on. And there really was that 10 o’clock at night when the news came on asking do you know where your kids are and dad would always yell out…are the kids home? 😂 we weren’t allowed inside the house during the day we had to stay outside and play. We even drank from strangers, water hoses, especially when we’re out on our bicycles all day.

How do you think the KOOL-AID MOM started? It was the one stay at home mom in the neighborhood that would make you Something other than garden hose water. If they also sold Tupperware you might even get lucky enough to get a Kool-Aid popsicle!

Also your siblings could and would smack you around but if another kid hit you and your brothers or sisters didn’t immediately enter the fight on your behalf, your parents would beat them when you all came home. We were wolf packs. 😆

I love her. No. Sinks were not an option. 🤣🤣🤣 Gen X here. 66 version. These people who are so pampered don’t understand being thrown outside for hours on end and enjoying their time playing, riding bikes, skating, doing anything outside was preferred. 🤣

Hoses were community property and available everywhere. It was common to sneak around backyards and construction sites so where the hell else would you go…Starbucks? Nobody went inside to their houses; that was mom’s space and she had a belt ready for you for staying out too late or missing lunch!

My mom would kick us out and lock the door to watch the soap opera Santa Barbara. We lived in Glendale AZ. It was 119° the last summer I lived there. Needless to say the hose water was hot.

Absolutely true. I remember it well. And the times you were so thirsty on a hot day and burned your mouth because the water in the hose was hot but you always forgot because you were so thirsty. And jarts. They were fun and we used to throw them at each other. 8 stiches for my friend Rob. These kids today are very sheltered.

Not just the hose...but at the school playground after school we could suck water out of the sprinkler heads that were flush with the grass. Desert survival tactics at age 10
