This is how a Pulse Oximeter works

A pulse oximeter is a non-invasive device that measures the oxygen saturation level of your blood. It works by passing beams of light through the blood in your finger, earlobe, or toe to measure changes in light absorption in oxygenated or deoxygenated blood. This process helps determine the percentage of oxygen carried by red blood cells, which is displayed as an SpO2 value. The device can rapidly detect even small changes in oxygen levels, which is crucial for individuals with certain health conditions or during medical procedures. The pulse oximeter emits two wavelengths of light, red and infrared, which pass through the body part to a detector. Oxygenated (oxyhemoglobin) and deoxygenated (deoxyhemoglobin) blood absorb different amounts and wavelengths of light. The device calculates the ratio of absorbed light, which correlates with the oxygen saturation of the blood. The reading you get, typically between 95% and 100% for healthy individuals, indicates how well oxygen is being transported to parts of the body furthest from the heart. If the reading falls below normal levels, it may suggest a need for medical attention or supplemental oxygen.
