Morse code was basically the world’s first data compression ever. and visualizations like these make the concept so easy to understand! 🙏 Back in the day around 1830s, Samuel Morse studied letter frequencies and gave common letters super short codes (E = dot, T = dash) so that telegrams could be sent faster over telegraph lines. In essence this tree structure is a 'Huffman tree'. Which is the same idea David Huffman turned into a perfect algorithm in 1952. It is the tech behind the compression that mad ZIP files, JPEG photos, MP3 music, and pretty much every compressed file on your phone today! A human nearly 150 years ahead of his time, Samuel Morse! One more thing. Memorizing Morse code is not difficult. See the chart below.

So, the Morse is the inspiration for this.

I learned Morse Code many decades ago. But I have never seen this. Quite clever and obvious now that I have.

Mind blown every time I see this visualized 😳 The whole alphabet elegantly packed into a binary tree like this is peak human cleverness.

That does not explain how more code works. The tree is like a tool to help the receiver of a Morse Code message to decode it.

My husband was a 20 year submariner radioman. Mostly on the U.S.S. Stonewall Jackson. 😊

I learned Morse code when I was 13 years old. I am still able to interpret it if I hear it well 25 years later! Even at high speeds

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear about *Morse code* is *Interstellar*, and for good reason. Anyone who's seen the movie knows exactly why.

I learned Morris Code in high school, I understood the dots and dashes by listening. Surprised I still remembered most of it after 60 years.
