I am a public school teacher for close to 20 years and 100% agree with Sowell. Good Teachers and students are captive in this public school system. Unions have only become worse with its destruction of education and districts are top heavy full of positions that usually interfere with good teaching and trickle down terrible policy.

From start to finish: This is true. I lived it. Believe Dr. Sowell and support the efforts to fundamentally IMPROVE our children's education.

Another huge difference is culture. When I was in public school, very few kids misbehaved, teachers were respected by kids (mostly). As a public school teacher today, I am cussed out, have stuff thrown around, the kids actively ignore you. It’s bad. :-(

We placed our first born in our “neighborhood” school. Found out no one in our neighborhood used that school! After three years, her being “top” of her class, we pulled her out and put her in Catholic school. She was more than 6 months behind. Worked hard and got her caught up. Within 2 years she was in the top of her class. Public school promoted mediocrity.

Yes. No tenure. No automatic seniority. Pay and promotions according to merit/ability to track students for college. The Democratic Party must change their position and do what is right for kids regardless of whether it upsets special interests within our base

And that was 31 years ago! Much, much worse now! Just imagine if they listened to him and made the changes that may not have so obviously needed then! It is an emergency now. Of course, it would bust the grip that the two unions have on the system, just as a by product!
