What's amazing is that these WOODEN poles didn't rot and break down over the years, bringing the whole building down.

This video simultaneously explain it and doesn't explain it.

there must be a large amount of maintenance and careful inspection done to those wooden logs after hundreds of years I imagine

What makes me wonder is how intelligent, knowledge and information that the engineers had during this time and era , the architect and engineers did an awesome job.

These 1600 years old wood still stand there to support the city. These woods are insanly protected by beneath the mud non oxigen environment.

They constantly replace the pillars but I believe not nearly at the rate required. The whole city is sinking. And indeed regularly floods as a matter of course. A micro tourist industry has developed around having lunch wearing wellingtons as the water laps at your feet. It’s utterly charming and Italian. Also pretty symbolic of the ephemeral nature of all our civilisations.

Did you know Venice was built on water out of pure survival? Back in the 5th century, locals fled invading armies by escaping into marshy lagoon mudflats. To build a permanent city, they drove millions of wooden logs deep into the subsoil to create solid stone foundations like what you see in the vid

Water is toxic. An American actress, forgot her name, fell into the water while filming a movie, and had a chronic infection of the eyes the rest of her life. It’s ok to take a boat but you should never touch the water.

And yet simple flooding some corrupt government of the world cannot solve properly, risking the lives and property of her citizens.

Mind-blowing engineering! Venice isn't floating, it's standing on an "upside-down forest" of millions of wooden piles (alder, oak, larch) hammered into the lagoon mud until they hit firmer clay.

Well no. The wooden poles were driven so deep into the mud that the upper end was quite below the top mud layer. Then came the stone foundations. So the poles were not exposed to oxygen and any creepy crawlies that might eat the wood or burrow in it.

Is that up to code? Did they pay for a building permit at their local office?

I wonder why they built a city on water back then though. How can they do that kind of foundation back on those years?

Fascinating engineering! 🌊🏛️ It’s amazing how Venice was built on wooden piles driven deep into the lagoon, creating a foundation that’s lasted for centuries. Human ingenuity is truly remarkable. 👏
