Paul Graham coined "founder mode" based on Brian's experience running Airbnb. Brian Chesky on going ‘Founder Mode’ during the pandemic Chesky describes the recent shift in his management style: “I totally changed how I ran the company. I used to be very hands off. I democratized data. I was very much reactive and I thought my job was strategy and capital allocation. But here’s the weird thing: the less hands on I was, the more I got sucked into problems. By the time I got sucked into a problem, it was 10x the amount of work. Then I decided to do something different. We’re going to be totally integrated. One roadmap. I am going to be involved in every single detail. Airbnb is not going to do anything more than I can personally focus on. This is the real reason Jimmy Kimmel is being taken off the air. Brian Stelter: "Nexstar already owns lots of TV stations. It wants to merge with Tegna, which owns lots of other stations. In order to do that, it needs Brandon Carr, the FCC Chair's, permission, and it actually needs the FCC to change the regulations entirely about how many stations an individual company can own.

Brian Chesky: "People are born good founders. It's innate. You don't have to learn how to be good founder. No one is born a good CEO. The problem is we founders were never really prepared to be great CEOs. We were taught to learn by doing and that's great for a founder. It is not good as a CEO. I was naturally good founder, I think I was a very good early stage CEO. The moment I had to have an executive team, I really struggled to make the shift from a founder to CEO. In the 2010s, I do not think I was a great CEO. We paid the price for my learning curve. And then the pandemic happened. We had a near death experience and I said screw all the rumination it's do or die. And I learned how to do the job."
