This is no joke: the SBC hobby is dying

You’re not supposed to make things Jeff, you’re not even supposed to buy them. You rent things. You will own nothing and be happy.

Sorry to black pill. It’s just when it happens to all your hobbies, it burns.

absolutely insane - I just put together a home lab a few weeks ago and paid $85 for 4gb pi 5's, and now they're $110. This means it's absolutely cheaper to recycle old PCs / laptops rather than use SBCs.

If it's getting expensive for you guys, imagine here in Brazil

We will do something about this. We are launch Das Frite at the end of April for $30 with 1GB. We have already optimized the software stack to have the board sit between Pi 3 and Pi 4 in performance but it will feature advanced decode and encode capability.

Don't worry, the ddr price will go down in half a year!

I sure hope so

I was at MC today, the 16gb pi was $309. I saw them putting the new price stickers on.

In the grand scheme of thing, what has permitted the emergence of Low cost SBC was the relatively high availability of component and stability of the supply chains. Everything that required low cost component is going to suffer.

@reprinted3D *inhales* FUCKKKKKKKK

I don't necessarily agree with this. Raspberry PI 3A originally had a 1.4 GHz Processor and 512 MB RAM. Today, PI Zero 2W has 1GHz processor and 512 MB RAM (and HDMI and Wifi and Bluetooth) and costs $15 at MicroCenter. The problem is the preferred OS for projects is too big. Everyone wants to run a full blown linux desktop on these, so they had to get more power and more memory. What we need is a small retro-style OS that runs well on a PI 2 Zero and is super easy and fun to develop for. I think that is the missing piece.

This really sucks. I just want a spare on hand. Sold out.

Sadly true, we just deployed 98 of these. With prices continuing to trend higher, it becomes less and less viable.

Maybe we can start writing efficient software that does not waste gigabytes of RAM.

Unfortunately it is cheaper to get an older intel based 3L mini case then a new PI at this moment. I would prefer to have way smaller Pi board in my meter cupboard. But the prices are way off the charts.. If they are even available. 1 or 2 GB feels a bit to small.

But I just started. Owned multiple orange-pi s. It's all because of you Jeff 😆

i think it is a joke cmon

NOT IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT This has been in limbo for almost a year (this is a part of something else) The smaller SOM is the Alice Board; a 16GB RK3576 based solution for $120 The larger carrier is the Eugeo Board; an open source carrier And an RTC module (OS)

If 1.5GB chips are cheap, then are 3GB chips cheap? What about 6, 9, or 12GB chips? If so, let's get a 24GB Pi 5 cooking for $200. 😁

It's not dying. It's just the models with more RAM that are annoyingly expensive. The 1GB models are still cheap and they can do a lot of things. For educational purpose, as the Pi was originally intended, we're still in a very good position with the hardware.

Well this is depressing. I guess we’ll have to start taking up non-tech hobbies soon.

I have 5 in my drawer collecting dust.

Waaaaay too expensive. The RAM prices were a bubble due to Sam Altman lying to suppliers. Now that he has rug pulled them, we better see these prices come back down.

RPI like many things that started open-source like Ubiquiti, pfSense, soon get greedy. RPI has been a hype from the start, now that folks got used to it, pay the price. Dell Wyse 3040 is a 5v3a thin client, you don't need RPI to run stuff.

We should go back to what was like in 70s and 80s, just optimize software for memory constrained systems

I bought a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB for about 110 dollars last year, and I didn't expect that recently even the second-hand one has risen to 145~160 dollars.

Anything to do with Raspberry Pi goin public mid last year? They have shareholders to keep happy now.

But I just STARTED!

What is SBC?

This is so sad 😞

I'm sure I would want at least one more 4GB CM5. The powers that be sure want to kill our fun.

Maybe someone will release a RAM module with an optional SBC attachment.

Long ago Pi became an industrial iOT device.

sell it minus the ram.

I got a think client (old but new and unused) instead of new SBC. As a bonus, it has a better I/O subsystem.

The Pi people didn't want my money anyways.

It's sad. I'm giving Raspberry PI business max 2 years of life unless something changes super fast.
