Update: Jacob just bailed on his “free” permanent supportive housing in Seattle after only a few weeks and is heading back to his home state, Missouri He was assaulted DESC and saw firsthand the rampant drugs, untreated mental illness, and chaos these facilities have become. Despite his own disabilities, Jacob understands the policy failure better than most: warehousing people under the Housing First model isn’t compassion, it’s harming the vulnerable, the neighborhood, and everyone paying for it. Christopher lives Plymouth Housing and has been a volunteer for We Heart Seattle until the CEO banned me from recruiting more residents to come out with us. During this week’s cleanup we found a 9-month-old baby & mom living in a tent in the park. Mom has already cycled through the best family shelter programs in the county… yet she’s still on the streets. Immediate needs: clothes, food & diapers. NEW: The Downtown Emergency Service Center cancer is spreading across Seattle. This latest incident at DESC's Hobson Place perfectly encompasses what's wrong with Housing First policies and permanent supportive housing. There is an elderly woman who has to share a floor with fentanyl dealers and drug addicts. Why is this vulnerable woman living in a place like this? Was this the only option for her in the final years of her life? What responsibility does taxpayer funded DESC have in keeping senior citizens safe in their facilities? I could go on and on. Then right in front of Hobson Place, people are smoking fentanyl and partying on the sidewalk. Down the block, there is another massive tent encampment where DESC residents buy and sell drugs. The homeless industrial complex has created an eco-system of crime, chaos, and death wherever it goes. This is why the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is in the process of defunding these hell holes. The city, county, and state should follow suit.

Just because we keep building more shelter beds and tiny home villages doesn’t mean people actually stay in them. That’s why, despite all the spending and new capacity, our streets never look cleaner or safer. Homeless drug addicts continue to roam the city, loitering in parks and using fentanyl and meth in plain view. Nicholas confided that the policy at the tiny home villages is remarkably lax: residents are only required to stay there two or three nights a week to avoid eviction. HIDDEN SEATTLE: A few days ago, outreach group We Heart Seattle(We Heart Seattle) found a stolen United Rentals(United Rentals) forklift abandoned in a #Seattle homeless encampment along the East Duwamish Greenbelt. But there was much more. Walking further into the heavily wooded area, we discovered a constellation of tents and structures, even some set up under I-5 which is Washington State Department of Transportation(Washington State DOT) property. We spoke to several people who say they are intentionally trying to live off the grid. This is a choice. Once again, this is not a housing issue. "Housing first" is not working. Yet this entire region is doubling down on this failed policy. There are people who do not want to pay rent, bills, and are taking advantage of the free services here in #KingCounty. FACTS.
