This is the 2003 US Open Final, last time an american won it. Look at the pace of rallies, my god I can't believe how much faster and intense things are these days. Difference in level is crazy 🤯

1) it looks pretty similar 2) you’re actually making the argument that players swung harder back then when adjusted for technology

Roddick at age 44 in the exhibition with Fed literally served at 134mph.. imagine him in today’s game in his prime, he’d have by far the best serve on tour. Do you even understand tennis? Look at the rackets and balls of back then

Not only have the racquets evolved, but the strings are completely different. Roddick was playing synthetic gut in 2003. Today they are using polyester strings. The newer racquet/strings combos are where a lot of the power (and spin) increases are coming from.

it’s actually not that different

Roddick led the h2h with Djokovic 5-4. Put Andy and others of that era in today’s game and they hit 100x harder

Roddick served at up to 155 mph

You don’t understand tennis. Racquets and strings have evolved and Roddick was one of the first big servers at 6’2” and he also was one of the first to come out with that modern forehand. Both these guys will easily be contenders if they played today with no Fed, Nadal and Novak

I don’t see much of a difference. Roddick was crushing the ball.

Rackets balls and courts have all changed. Put roddick in today’s era he’d still have the limitations he always had but he’d do just fine

And roddick was still hitting 145 on the serve

What are you talking about? Take a stopwatch and time the ball. Not to mention the rallies are evidently better... and this is Roddick we're talking about

Honestly it’s not that far off at all

Idk if everything is faster today…the avg rally ball speed is only 1-3 mph faster today than it was in 2003…when you look at it that way…everyone just sucks nowadays

It’s not that different. And these aren’t the two biggest hitters. Show some clips of Federer for example. You’ll see power hitting.

The tennis level in 2003 was A LOT better than today.

And the courts got slower since then.

@Served_Podcast nonsense my man ! Roddick serve, forehand, athleticism, and attitude would hold up just fine in today’s game.

For a moment I had to stop and wonder why there were three people standing on the back of the court.

I think the avg ball speed is pretty much the same tbh. Recording gear wasn't as great/clear back then, so playback make it appear slower.

Not really much of a difference, to be honest.

The “power” you see in modern tennis is combination of stiffer, bigger & lighter racquets; polyester strings; & better athlete conditioning & technique. Like in any sport, advances in technology & a deeper understanding of the human body have driven greater performance in tennis.

Yeah racquets and strings have sped up the game a LOT!

It's true in every sport . Footballers are so much better athletes now than in that era. Not necessarily better in terms of skill and technique in general, but in physicality.
