JUST IN: Tanzania has officially integrated the Port of Dar es Salaam with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, directly linking the port to the inland logistics hubs of Nala Dry Port in Dodoma and Kwala Dry Port in the Coast Region. The new connection is expected to accelerate cargo movement by up to 80% compared to transit timelines currently experienced across competing regional trade corridors. The country’s long-term logistics strategy aims to position Dar es Salaam as the fastest and most efficient maritime gateway in East and Central Africa. By 2028, the SGR line is expected to extend to Isaka Dry Port in Shinyanga, while full rail connectivity to the borders of Rwanda and Burundi is targeted by 2030. Once completed, Tanzania intends for transit cargo moving through Dar Port to reach destinations across the East African Community (EAC) corridor in less than 48 hours. The transformation follows more than $1 Billion in modernization and expansion investments at Dar es Salaam Port led by DP World. As a result, annual cargo throughput capacity has now increased from a minimum of 27.7 million tonnes toward a projected 50 million tonnes. Performance figures for the 2025/26 financial year already indicate strong growth momentum across the port ecosystem. Container volumes surged by 55%, roll-on/roll-off (RORO) traffic increased by 20%, general cargo rose by 25%, while dry bulk cargo expanded by 22%.

East China port launches first Arctic shipping route to Europe The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in the eastern province of Zhejiang launched its first China-Europe Arctic container express route on Monday, marking the first time the port has extended a route to the Arctic Ocean. The new route crosses directly to Europe via the Northeast Arctic passage, slashing the transit time from Zhoushan Port to Britain's Felixstowe Port to just 18 days. This is significantly faster than the China-Europe freight train (about 25 days), the Suez Canal route (about 40 days), and the Cape of Good Hope route (about 50 days). The route's maiden voyage is set to reach Felixstowe on Oct. 10. The shipment includes a mix of goods such as daily necessities, clothing, spare machinery parts, as well as high-value items like energy storage cabinets and power batteries. Once in Felixstowe, these goods will be distributed across Europe, according to local customs authorities in Ningbo.

Dockworkers in this traditionally left-leaning town, supported by grassroots unions, staged a protest at the entrance of the port basin to block the Israeli shipping company Zim from docking. “No unloading, loading, or storage operations will be carried out,” the dockworkers declared, adding they would launch a targeted strike against ships linked to Israel’s economy if docking permission is granted. Another Zim ship is expected to arrive in Livorno on Thursday. Although the port authority formally grants docking permission, a ship cannot operate without the help of dockworkers. Permission has been withheld so far due to the protests. Over the past two years, Italian ports have already witnessed acts of civil disobedience blocking weapons shipments to Israel. This, however, is the first time a non-military cargo ship has been targeted.
