She is our first grandcalf of 2026, born to an orphan we rescued, raised, and rewilded (as you'll have read, more have since followed!). We aren’t the ones who are smitten. A little over two months old, and baby Kiki is already honing essential life skills! Dunking, splashing and getting most of the water in her mouth: trunks take time to master but Kihari's wild-born calf Kiki is doing everything right. Sandwiched between her mum, one-tusked Kihari, and her nanny, she's got the very best support system around her to learn from – something her own mother, Kihari, never had (she was rescued as an orphan and raised by our Keepers). It was an unusual upbringing – but it worked! Kihari is now living successfully back in the wild, where she is raising her own calf! Reacquaint yourself with Kiki:

Sssh, after catching her forty winks, sleepy Aura stretches and wakes up from her nap. She was just a newborn when we filmed this, still wobbly-footed. Notice the herd standing around her: they waited until she woke up, before they moved on! Aura is the offspring of an orphan we rescued and raised. There's a dynasty unfolding in Kenya – and like any family, it's full of love and drama. Right now, the season is all about the new babies that have joined. The matriarch of the family? Edie, an orphan we rescued in 1999 after she fell into a well as a calf. As if it couldn't have got worse, she was abandoned by her family at first light when herdsmen arrived. But she's a symbol of strength and resilience. With the help of our Keepers, we raised her until she was ready to find her own place in the wild. This sums up Zigi perfectly – bold, curious and a bit of a showboat. As Umani’s youngest grandcalf, he has no shortage of devoted nannies. We dare you to resist that tiny trunk! His mother, Zongoloni is one of our greatest success stories. Rescued after poachers killed her mother, we raised her until she was ready to return to the wild - where she is now raising her own beautiful baby. Milk on demand, surrounded by nannies, protected by his mother: this is life as it should be for a baby elephant. But Nsimba’s mum, Naipoki, was rescued from a well when she was only two months old, and so never had this. Instead, our Keepers became Naipoki’s family, giving her all the love and care she needed until she was ready to return to the wild. Fifteen years on, Naipoki is now putting into practice everything she learned in our care about what motherhood looks like, doing a brilliant job of raising Nsimba while our Keepers watch proudly on. Mweya's journey began in Uganda – the only Ugandan orphan we have ever raised. In 2001, she wandered into a fishing village near Lake George as a days-old calf. Villagers transported her across the channel in a fishing boat and released her back into the bush, not knowing what else to do. Word got out. She was recaptured and cared for by volunteers in Uganda, with telephone guidance from our Nairobi team, before joining our Nursery. Today, Mweya is a 24-year-old matriarch living wild in Tsavo with daughter Mwitu and one-year-old Mwangaza (walking alongside her here). After losing her second calf, Mojo, during the 2022 drought, Mweya chose to return to our Voi stockades before giving birth – ensuring her herd could benefit from the support system there, before returning back to wander the wild. One rescued calf. Now a matriarch raising the next generation. Meet Mweya:

She turned three in March, and the Keepers have started preparing for the next milestone: her mother, Murera is expecting her second calf, due later this year, making Mwana a big sister. She's already had plenty of practice under her belt, helping to take care of the other wild-born babies in the herd who have come after her. When they first turned up, she was a bit put out that she wasn’t the baby anymore. Now, though, she’s a doting sisterly figure to them. Mwana is one of 92 calves born to orphaned elephants we've rescued, raised and returned to the wild. Meet some of the others:

He was born on 24 April 2025 to ex-orphan Zongoloni – her first calf, and the fourth wild-born of the Umani herd. It has become a time-honoured tradition for ex-orphans to return ‘home’ to our stockades within days or even hours of giving birth, bursting with pride and eager to show off their new addition to the people who raised them. But, when an ex-orphan brings their new calf home, do they let our Keepers near? Some do, the choice is always theirs. Emily was the first of our Nursery-reared orphans to return with a wild-born calf, and she was confident enough to share her baby with the Keepers who had raised her. The most trusting examples are the ex-orphans who've returned to give birth at the Stockades - a miracle we've seen unfold twice. Emily is one of them. Melia is the other:

One of the loveliest things about what we do? Watching wild-born babies grow up. This is Ola. She's a miracle baby but it's actually her mother, Olare's, story that makes this scene even more special. Back in 2009, an elephant calf was found clinging to her dying mother in the Mara. With Vets left with no choice but to end the mother's suffering, we brought the orphaned calf to the Nursery. That baby was named Olare, and we raised her as our own. Today, Olare is all grown up, living wild with a daughter of her own: little Ola – two years old, round-cheeked and bright-eyed. Discover their story:
