Embarrassing that he refers to the 1500s Calvin and Luther as the church fathers Return to Orthodoxy

An interesting counter worth thinking about: Where in Scripture does God say to start excluding our children from receiving the sign of the covenant?

🌷 LIZZIE🌷's profile picture
🌷 LIZZIE🌷6 months ago

The part where they don’t believe

Addison Smith's profile picture
Addison Smith6 months ago

Babies in the Old Testament received the sign for thousands of years, and they didn't (couldn't) believe. You would think that God ordering something to cease that was as huge of a deal as the sign was in the OT, you would have some record of protest/controversy.

Addison Smith's profile picture
Addison Smith6 months ago

Really the argument boils down to: If it's true that the sign across OT and NT points to the same thing, why wouldn't it follow that the only thing about it that changed was the mode (circumcision-->baptism), and not what it signifies/who it belongs to?

Yeah, we should also not allow kids to sing "Jesus Loves me" or pray until they make a public profession of faith and are baptized. Yeah, totally.

@gkschultzy Asserting "Scripture is clear" as a shutdown argument, when many sincere Christians in good faith read the same Scripture and disagree with you, is a form of gaslighting.

I just presented, from the Scriptures, a "partial" case on infant baptism (there was so much more I did not present). Seems pretty clear to me it's in there.

I'm a Baptist and attend an SBC church, but I do think there is a good case for infant baptism. When he says "just read scripture" he must be skipping Acts 16:33: And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.

Yep. It’s honestly pretty simple: if the text of scripture does not reveal it to us, there’s no reason to believe it or practice it. If you have to impose assumptions onto the text that text does not reveal, you’re doing it wrong.

🔥 Salvation, the greatest miracle of all is simple. “Repent and believe the gospel” Jesus tells us in Mark 1. Why would baptism be complicated? Because it’s not.

So you’re a baptist because you don’t have a good hermeneutic? Okay…

"but babies can have faith so we assume they do!" Cool - adults can have faith, but we don't assume they do! "Faith has nothing to do with the intellect, it's a spiritual ascent" Okay, so an adult can cognitively deny the Gospel but still have faith, right?

Except when the bible says the whole household. Also why were babies circumcised as a baby and not when they made an adult decision?

If baptism is the fulfillment of circumcision, and baby's were circumcized....maybe....

Baptizing infants is not done to “save them” (just as any ritual does not save) it is more of a statement of “we look forward to future”. Ultimately, no baptism ritual has any bearing on salvation. A lot of people think it does; this is the real issue. Widespread misunderstanding and ignorance surrounding this issue. Both internal and external.

@poncebrother Agreed. I've learned more from Presbyterians than any other denomination, but I just can't agree with them on baptism based on the text.

I used to believe that babies should not be baptized. I later learned in bible study that God is quite protective of his little ones in faith. Below is a screenshot from the LCMS website.

Our Church (Baptist) does not baptise babies. We do "dedicate" them but it about the parents promising to bring them up in the way of Christ.

Google the Baptist manual and ask yourself…Now why would a denomination use a manual other than the Bible.

You should read "To a thousand generations" by Doug Wilson. The passages about households is like the weakest part of the argument in favor of infant baptism.

Baptism is the new circumcision. 😇 I’ve come to believe lately that infant baptism is the correct way. It’s horrible for 2 Christian parents to raise children and subconsciously project onto the child’s mind that they are not saved until they sin enough when they get older. It’s horrible. Listen to this one fact. Baptism is the new circumcision. A Jew doesn’t become a Jew once they sin enough and grow up a pagan then get circumcised as an adult. Nope. Jews grow up Jews and Christians grow up Christians. God set it up to save entire households. It does mention gentile households being baptized in scripture. It does. A child born in a Christian household has to walk AWAY from Christ. Children should grow up with saving faith. Not acquire it after enough sins. My wife and I never baptized our children because of this Baptist false teaching , we were waiting, and they always had real strong faith and even baptism in the Holy Spirit. Then life hit me hard and she divorced me right about the age I was hoping to baptize the girls. Very messy situation. Now my girls are of age and confused. They should never have this confusion. I feel horrible about it and very soon I’m having the big talk with them and hope they get baptized and baptize the very young grandchildren. Abraham was the father of faith. He baptized Isaac at 8 days and Isaac baptized Jacob at 8 days. They didn’t wait to see if they wanted to join the household. Read the story about Moses not circumcising his one mixed race child and God getting very angry until the wife did it for him. These are patterns. We lost the plot with baptisms in Nondenominational churches, Evangelical churches. God saves households. Your children can temporarily LOSE saving faith they grew up with if you don’t obey the patterns, the correct path God himself set up.

Baptism today is merely an act of obedience... emulating Christ, and an external testimony to onlookers of your internal re-birth into the faith of Christ. Baptism is not necessary for salvation. When we are saved, Christ took on our sinfulness, and we received *his righteousness*... which is why *he* was baptized. Ie He was baptized *for us*. He fulfilled *all righteousness* for us. And it is important to understand that while Jesus sent his disciples to baptize (Peter and co)... Paul our apostle specifically states *He himself was not sent to baptize* (1 Corinthians 1), and even say He 'thanked God' he had baptized none of you. Which he would never say if Baptism was necessary for salvation... instead he says *he preached the Cross*... for the Cross is all sufficient to save the sinner... without any other works or conditions.

If what he says is true, then Jesus getting baptized doesn’t make any sense.

They’re not “vague” references. They’re pretty clear in their meanings: Acts 16:15 Acts 16:33 Acts 18:8 Acts 10:44-48 1 Corinthians 1:16 Scriptural examples of entire households being baptized. Are we to assume that there were no children or infants in all these examples of entire families being baptized? 🤔

I'm just a Bible Believer. Baptism is so misunderstood. Belief, Faith, Dying to self...so important. You can't do that until you can understand it - babies are INNOCENT and don't need forgiveness yet. Good post.

It is clearly evident in God’s Word that it’s believer’s baptism! Jesus would have been baptized as a baby had He wanted us to baptize babies.

Yes, get all of history out of your mind (I mean, you're smarter than everyone who came before you right?) just get all of that out of your mind, you're smarter than them, sola interpretation. I know that in 21st century America we've finally figured out what baptism means. God had it wrong all these years, see He just planned for a woman on social media to come and explain it. His Scripture wasn't good enough, He wanted to wait until the 21st century to make clear what baptism meant.
