Agree. The people who advance are those who tow the party line and make the boss look good. They are obedient and non-threatening. Brighter, more creative, people rock the boat and tend to make leaders feel insecure. Over time a culture is created where incompetence is rewarded.

Scott Adams wrote a book about it The Dilbert Principle.

Sounds right. This is also way more prevalent now as most “leaders” have never really done anything or built anything substantive, making them extra insecure.

It resonates with me. I have observed that, in several instances, mediocre managers are promoted over those who are genuinely competent.

Based on my experience, totally true. If you don't drink the company Kool-Aid, and regurgitate it -- regardless of how wrong it is -- you will not advance. Leaders hire people like themselves, not the best talent. DEI and quotas didn't help.

This is just an unlikable person coping about why she never gets promoted (its because she is annoying).

Bruh that’s not true at all. You can show competence without making your superiors ‘realize how little control they have’ Your job is to make your manager look good. If you can do that, you’ll be promoted. Never outshine the master

I saw a meltdown employee get promoted in an attempt to prevent meltdowns. Work that logic.

I have 40 yrs of experience; the last 27 as C Level… I do not disagree with this statement completely; I have a different spin to it: Most organizations tolerate a limited amount of outliers -misfits with special skills/stars-; too much of them seriously may harm the environment… Successful companies are the ones which balance the outliers vs the status quoists in every level… It is no different than sports teams; you need stars as well as the ones who obey the Coach…

Not all the time but most of the time it seems the noisy, chatty Karen's move up just because they are so much more visible. They are not good at the job but they sure can BS. 🙄🙄🙄

It’s this and your company hires 1 Indian and then they hire all Indians of their same caste and fire all of the Americans once one of them reaches a position of influence not because of competence, because of the same issues brought up in the video. Indians are not true leaders, they are followers by nature.

This is 100% true. Ass kissers have always gotten ahead of the people know shit. It’s EQ vs IQ. People that praise Trump get rewarded by playing towards his ego & super low EQ/IQ. He feels boosted and they get rewarded.

Look up the Peter Principle. It's a thing. Another thing is HR is not to help you, but to help the company. It is a strategy to "keep the business going" to fill seats w low paid B team. They just want to keep the lights on.

I worked alongside an IT mega genius who was passed over for promotion which went to an underhanded, brown nosing, backstabber. We were a small team of 5 that got doubled. 3 of us wanted Mega Genius to be supervisor, when backstabber got the job, MG left and work just got shite.

Happened to me. I was a middle manager. Called out my ops leader for a blatant lie. 3 months later came performance review. Standard raise was 3%. All I got was 1% on some made up BS excuse. I transferred out ASAP.

Exactly. Good description of Corporate America. No Exceptions. ...and when you hear someone say "Oh, my boss is great"... it's only because that person is incompetent too.

This implies that society is continuously dumbed down, limited, and stripped of opportunity to placate small-minded people's egos. Seems accurate.

The Peter Principle in effect. Employees are promoted until they reach their level of incompetence, at which the promotions stop, but they're stuck in a role they have no business being in.

I didn’t play golf with my bosses. It limited my promotions, even though on merit, I was definitely deserving over other who did play golf. Real story…
