This is why this bird is called a pelican, not a pelican’t. This is the first time I’ve been able to capture the whole process in one take. Now you know why pelicans have such big pouches.

Those birds correct for light refraction at the water's surface. They adjust the position of their head and their speed. The ability of a heron to cope with light refraction at the air/water interface has been investigated in 1987 by Katzir. The heron’s capture rate of small stationary underwater prey from a variety of angles is high. That indicated the ability to correct for refraction. The researchers found out that the bird corrects his head between ‘prestrike’ and ‘strike’, sometimes making adjustments up to 10 cm between apparent prey position and real prey position. The pelican will no doubt adjust for it too. Marvellous, isn’t it?
