This is actually a lie and it’s the same exact thing for debit or credit cards, if you get hacked or scammed it’s the same thing. Don’t go using credit cards and getting into debt. 💸 Unless you are trying to build credit history then use credit.

I've been using my debit card almost exclusively for two decades for everything and never had a single issue

Imagine a banker advising you to use a credit card 🙄

Using a second debit card is the way to go, transfer money from the main account and only use that secondary as your to go card, as it doesnt have access to all of the funds.

Nah don’t listen to this. This is how credit card debt creeps up on you.

It's extremely easy to dispute a fraudulent or malicious charge on a debit card with your bank. They give you temporary credit while they investigate.

All he's saying is use a credit card for everyday purchases(Breakfast, gas, maybe a small grocery run, oil change, coffee shop) he never said use your credit card to buy 3 flat screens, brand new furniture and a new bedroom set. He's talking to the financially mature audience

He’s not wrong. I worked in debit and credit card fraud. You have a way higher chance of recovering money from fraud on a credit card than a debit card.

Ok. So yeah a banker will push you away from a free service (debit card) and steer you to a high interest alternative

He's just pushing the "you must have a credit card" narrative. Credit cards are unnecessary as you are spending money which is not yours & no one should use a debit card except for the reasons said above. Use cash for absolutely everything, that way no one has information on you.

You can dispute a charge on your debit card same as the credit card. You talking smack

This is completely false. You can file a dispute for fraud charges on your Visa/MasterCard debit card the same way you can with a credit card.

Sounds stupid... - keep a small amount of money ($200) in the account linked to the debit card - in case it gets compromised, that's the max they can steal. - everything else goes into a savings account and you make transfers as needed. As an added benefit, you get interest on the money as they sit in the account. - use disposable cards for sites or services you do not trust.

the trick is get a second account first your debit card spending. You just top it up from your main account . This guy is fear mongering to get you hooked on credit. only buy what you can afford, don't use credit

Here’s how you can get the protection of a credit card. When you use your debit card choose the option to use as credit. Do not use as debit and enter your pin. When you use as credit you get the protection of Visa or Mastercard. This will reduce your credit card debt building with interest.

If you don't want to get on the credit card game, here's the play: Whatever account you direct deposit into, don't have a debit card for it. Have another account that you can control transfers into that has a debit card. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

Bullshit. A Debit card with the Visa sign on it carries the same protection as a credit card. He is living in the past

Yeah sure go pay interests on everything you buy. What a fucking moron. The real advice is to never ever use a credit card, pay with what you have in the bank.

Listen to the banker who is telling you to accrue more and more interest? (when you can pay for the same things without interest). Under the guise that hacking will be harder to handle after the fact.

@TextCultEmpress Hes a banker so of course he recommends using a credit card. Just use a prepaid debit card, transfer what you want to spend to that and there is no connection to your bank account

This is country and bank specific. In Australia the same limited liability (no liability in most cases) protection exists from fraudulent use. The issue is your own funds being stolen/frozen (debit) during the investigation period v credit.

You can also dispute wrongful charges on your debit card, and get your money back with a 2 minute phone call. This guy is an idiot

Naw, it’s bank specific. I’ve had my numbers stolen 4-5 times and all I do is call PNC, they lock my card, return my money and then send me a new one. Turn on all alerts and catch it day one. Though, using a credit card (w auto-pay) is prob smarter because of points.
