The bridge not only cuts a 2-hour drive to 2 minutes, but also features as a theme park with a glass skywalk, a high-speed glass elevator, and a waterfall off the edge of the bridge. The demolition of the Dumbarton Bridge in 1984. The center span of the Dumbarton Bridge, which connects Menlo Park on the west side and Fremont on the east, was demolished in September 1984. It had become obsolete, unsafe, and a navigation hazard. The original Dumbarton Bridge had a swing-span drawbridge in the middle so ships could pass through. By the 1980s, the design was outdated and unreliable. In 1982, a modern high-rise bridge opened just north of the old one. It was taller, stronger, and high enough for ships to pass underneath without needing a moving span. The old center span was mechanically complex and expensive to maintain, had deteriorated after decades of use, and was no longer safe. Tag your friends and family who say “New York is so dangerous!” 😂 This is part two of yesterday’s adventure. I spent the late afternoon in beautiful Long Island City soaking in those jaw dropping skyline views. Then I hopped on the NYC Ferry and cruised down the East River to DUMBO, Brooklyn, right by the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. I ended the day walking across the Bridge back to Manhattan. (You can catch the full bridge walk on my Facebook page) DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It’s a trendy, waterfront neighborhood in Brooklyn known for its cobblestone streets, converted warehouse buildings, art galleries, and incredible views of the Manhattan skyline. It’s one of the most scenic and creative corners of New York City.
