In the late 1990s, I was suddenly widowed with two young children, aged six and seven. As a single mother, I moved into a leasehold property on Musqueam land in South Vancouver. What had been a peaceful neighbourhood changed dramatically when taxes tripled and the Musqueam First Nation sued 150 families, including mine, over a dispute about the annual lease payments. We made a fair offer. They refused to meet with us and took us to court instead. As a lawyer, I led our legal team all the way to the BC Supreme Court, the BC Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. We won for the leaseholders. We must respect history, but 95 percent of British Columbians cannot be left out in the cold simply because of one court decision from Richmond. This issue affects the entire province. 🚨 The fear over aboriginal land claims and governance is real. No one else running for Leader of the Conservative Party of B.C. knows this issue and its consequences like I do. This is not an an academic exercise. Years ago, when I was a young Mom with little kids, the Musqueam First Nation sued me and my homeowner neighbours over a leasehold land dispute, that ended up costing us $1.5m in legal and expert fees. We lost all equity in our homes due to the excessive demands from Musqueam FN. We couldn’t raise a mortgage or re-finance because appraisers could no longer certify any market value. But I refused to stay silent. As a lawyer I stepped up, fought back, and was part of the litigation team that opposed Musqueam FN all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, and we won. Today, after the Cowichan decision and the latest Musqueam FN deals with Ottawa and YVR, hundreds of thousands of British Columbians are angry and terrified: Can I renew my mortgage? Can I sell my home? Is my property even mine anymore? The NDP and Liberals keep saying “everything’s fine.” But it’s just not true. Your property rights are NOT safe under the current NDP-DRIPA chaos aided by the Federal Government. I know this is the truth because it’s already happened to me. With a new BC Conservative Government under my leadership, I will fight for your home and your property rights and I will stop the extremism. As Premier I will protect every BC family home and stop the handing off of our assets. Any deal that affects all British Columbians must be fair to all British Columbians. Yesterday, Aaron Gunn said something a lot of Canadians are thinking but too many politicians are afraid to say out loud. If governments claim to believe in private property rights, they should stop opening every public meeting by declaring the land Canadians live on isn’t really theirs. That’s the conversation people across this province are having right now. Today I was in the legislature because this isn’t theoretical anymore. Tara Armstrong introduced a simple bill with one basic principle: protect fee-simple private property rights in British Columbia. If you legally bought your home, your farm, or your land, the government should defend your ownership. And the government voted against it. Think about that. People spend their entire lives working to buy a home. They follow the rules. They pay their property taxes. Yet this government refused to stand up and say clearly that British Columbians have the right to own what they’ve worked for. Our land title system was built on a promise: if you own property, you actually own it. That promise matters to every homeowner, every family, and every person trying to build a future in this province. David Eby tried to dismiss Pierre Poilievre’s visit to Richmond as just a YouTube clip. That’s the kind of arrogance British Columbians have come to expect from this NDP government. Pierre was in Richmond announcing a real plan to protect private property rights and that’s something homeowners are deeply concerned about. Instead of listening, the NDP mocks British Columbians and calls their concerns “fear-mongering” simply because Conservatives are standing up with solutions. Private property rights are fundamental. They must be protected at the highest level. It’s time this provincial government started governing for all British Columbians.

On this Mother’s Day, we honor the Mothers of the Civil Rights Movement—Fannie Lou Hamer, Amelia Boynton, Ella Baker, and so many more—who bled and sacrificed for the voting rights the Supreme Court has dishonored. This isn’t about left or right. It’s about who we are as a nation: one committed to fairness, equal representation, and our sacred right to vote.

It’s really not up to the Supreme Court to say, “Well, we have reached the threshold where this issue around race and inclusion is no longer necessary.” That is not the job of the Court. And I’m struck, quite frankly, by the very easy and nonchalant way in which this extreme, activist Court knocks down precedent after precedent. The bar for doing that ought to be high, but we’re seeing with this Court—whether we’re talking about voting rights or a woman’s bodily autonomy, the right to decide with respect to her own body—they just strike down things they don’t like. They don’t have any respect, in the ways that we expect courts traditionally to, for precedent. And when precedents are torn down, you need a darn good reason to do it—and they are an activist court.
