This laser can't escape the water. Physics won't let it. It's called total internal reflection and it's the same physics behind fiber optic cables.

Well, some light is still escaping, otherwise we wouldn't see that red glow! 😉

It’s crazy to think this exact physics concept is what delivers high-speed fiber optic internet straight to our homes!

You see it, so it's already escaped.

Science just casually doing magic tricks ✨ This is total internal reflection. Same physics that runs the entire internet through fiber optics.

If it can’t escape then why can I see it? 🧐 some portion of light doesn’t escape but looks like a fair portion does.

Very cool! 😎

I want a laser for when I pee

Key properties of laser light: monochromatic, coherent, and directional. While the principle of stimulated emission was theorized by Einstein in 1917, the laser was first invented in 1960, and became popularized by the film Goldfinger in 1964, where laser metal-cutting was not even possible until 1967.

Not necessarily 100% true...you can still see photons escaping because the coefficient of reflectivity inside the stream is not 100%... Otheriwse, you'd see only the reflectance of the room on the outside of the water stream and no red laser light...

Only really viable with laminar flow though. Must have homogonous surface tension uniform enough to not lose the light to scattering disruptions in the water molocules. Many years ago, I did this with a green laser and a massive laminar jet I made from scratch that shot 30ft into the air. The laser followed it all the way back to the ground. Very cool and fun to see a bendy water laser lol.

so basically the laser is trapped in there forever, nature's prison

fiber optics: the one time light listens to rules and we built the whole internet on it.

Oh gosh. A sudden urge to visit the bathroom.

Si la lumière du laser était totalement piégée, on ne verrait pas du rouge dans le filet d'eau.

that's actually wild how the light just bounces back

This is a failed presentation - blow some smoke/mist towards the stream to visualize that claim!

I need to pee.

On a straight line

The Lazer can't shake it off
