Built entirely with the contributions of Ethiopians children, the elderly, the poor, and the rich alike the dam stands as a testament to the country’s determination and resilience. Despite immense pressure from Western powers favoring Egypt, Ethiopia made great sacrifices to complete this historic project. Ethiopia’s right to use its own resources and its fair share of the Abay (the Nile River) has long been undermined and misunderstood, as if Egypt owns the water a complete lie. FirstPost TV interview. Here’s a video highlighting the main topics I discussed: 1. Ethiopia’s recent elections. The successful completion of the elections is a big postive not only for Ethiopia but for Africa. Furthermore, it assures reforms will continue and sustained economic growth in the world’s 2nd fastest growing economy in 2026 (IMF). The elections were declared free and fair by international observers including the African Union (AU). 2. Ethiopia’s right to regain its own direct unfettered access to the sea. In my view it was a historical mistake that made Ethiopia landlocked. Ethiopia is the world’s 10th most populous country with 135 million people and amongst the 5 largest economies in Africa with a GDP of US$556 billion (PPP). 3. The US$5.0 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is already completed and fully operational. It’s a hydro electric power dam (not an irrigation dam) which does not divert or reduce water flow to Egypt. If there are water flow concerns, they can be addressed by highly qualified technical experts from Egypt and Ethiopia, as has been done continuously. The GERD provides electricity to millions across Eastern Africa who previously lived in absolute darkness and is a clean, green renewable energy source which is environmental friendly. I often see Eritreans debating about “Who Rules the Red Sea”. The debate over who "rules" the Red Sea, I believe misses multiple points. In short: no one does, the waves do. The Red Sea as a high-sea is a shared commons, not a sovereign domain. A better question may be is: “Who uses it?” Under international maritime law, every nation has the right to navigate and utilize it freely. For Ethiopia, the pursuit of reliable Red Sea access is rooted in history and justice. Once a littoral state with direct coastline, Ethiopia lost that access through unfair circumstances. The President of the Somali Region (Mustafe Mohammed Omer) is openly discussing about the breakup of the #Ethiopian state, admitting that he had prepared the Somali region to secede if the TPLF were to return to power. That admission speaks volumes about the state of Ethiopia under Abiy Ahmed. It depicts one ethnic region is unwilling to be governed by another, and where the prospect of TPLF leadership is seen as a trigger for the country's disintegration. In this video he clearly states that, as TPLF forces advanced toward Addis Ababa, his overriding concern was not to fight for his country, but breaking the Somali Region away from Ethiopia. The water has returned to its drains.. It’s a metaphorical Arabic proverb, which means that the situation has returned to what it used to be, as an analogy with the return of water to its natural streams. Modi reopened several gates of Baglihar Dam, not out of love of work, but he realized that such actions are irresponsible & countries will not tolerate them, where he saw firsthand the harsh Pakistani reaction. This is a clear lesson for the Egyptian regime, which is begging the sympathy of the Ethiopian regime regarding the waters of the Nile ! Power is the language that the world understands today, not diplomacy or compliments..
