People who have built a reputation, made a name for themselves, or have a significant following in India rarely change their public positions. Even when they do learn something new or realize they were wrong, they almost never admit it publicly. The reason is fairly simple. The public sees them as heroes. Changing your stance is often interpreted as admitting defeat or exposing weakness. And in our society, weakness carries a heavy social cost. The image they have spent years building can begin to erode the moment they acknowledge they were wrong. Part of the problem is that the Indian public, on average, is more invested in status than in truth. People tend to judge whether someone is successful, influential, or has "made it" rather than whether their views are actually correct. So consistency gets rewarded more than intellectual honesty. That is why changing one's position is especially difficult for public figures, and even for most adults. It is much easier when you live a relatively private life, where few people know you, you don't have an audience invested in your image, and changing your mind isn't immediately interpreted as weakness or confusion. In that setting, updating your beliefs has a much lower social cost.
