This runner at second base tried to steal third base. The catcher throws the ball down to the third base girl, she applies the tag and the runner is called out. The coach wanted obstruction on the third base girl. The 3rd base umpire said no obstruction. They ask... for the home plate umpire’s help but he sticks with the call from the 3rd base umpire. When you look at it, the runner had a clear path to the bag but ran high and slid into the third base girl when if she had gone in more of a straight line would have made the tag harder. She didn’t try to slide into the base but rather the fielder imho. I say no obstruction and the right call was made. You make the call.show more

This play caused some scorekeeper confusion. The batter is up with two outs and two strikes. Runner on third base. The batter swings and misses, strike three but the ball gets by the catcher. Before the catcher can throw down to first base to try and get the batter out, he tags the runner out from third who is trying to steal home. Inning over. Scenario 1 of 3 that I go over in my latest YouTube video “how to defend the walk to 2nd base with a runner on 3rd” For this specific scenario here’s a couple key points: •Get the ball back to the pitcher quickly. This forces the runner on third to commit and either break for home or retreat to the bag. •As pitcher is getting the ball back in the circle, peek to make sure the runner from 3rd went back to bag. •Allow the runner rounding 1st to get close to the 2nd baseman. The closer she is, the quicker the tag can be applied, allowing for an immediate throw home if the runner from third attempts to score. My biggest takeaway is at the end of this video. Let the girls try and make some plays. Get them to be competitive. The more they do it, the more comfortable they will get at it. Don’t just give up a free base- make the other team work for it.

This umpire gave this kid and his team two warnings for throwing the bat at the catcher. He told them if it happened again they were going to get ejected from the game. Well….it happened again. The batter hit the ball back to the pitcher and the pitcher overthrew first base. But, the umpire called a dead ball and called the batter out and ejected him from the game. The coach came out to argue and said the batter didn’t throw the bat, that it was a regular follow through on the back swing. He told the umpire they had it on film. The umpire said he had it on film too. Then the third base coach came down to argue and the umpire told the coach he was wrong and that he had it on video. You can hear the parents screaming at him. Some people said that was a terrible call and he let go legally on the follow through. You can also hear them tell the umpire that he had it out for that kid. 🤯 But a lot of people sided with the ump and said he handled it well and with that many warnings that it was a fantastic call. 💯 The umpire gave the same kid two prior warnings. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?
