The pitcher catches the ball near home, up the line a little bit and the runner bulldozes her over. But the little pitcher holds onto the ball. Runner is out! While the pitcher is down in pain, the following runner who reached third on the play decides she is going to try and score while the pitcher is hurt. But, the pitcher gets up and tags her out too! This play happened a couple of years ago in a regional final matchup. Unique to say the least. A single up the middle to center field. One run scores. The center fielder charges and throws home. The second runner is coming in to score. The runner slides, the catcher swipes at his arm, was he safe or out? The issue here is the runner who scored before stays behind home plate and is waving for the next runner to get down. The home plate umpire bumps into him, trips, and falls down and doesn’t see the play. 🤯 You can defer to the field umpire but if he didn’t see it, what call can you make? 🤷‍♂️ Some said the runner should be out because the player who scored first interfered with the home plate umpire. I have never seen a play like this. What do you think? What’s the call? Safe or out?

This is the play Wayne Randazzo is referring to. the MLB rulebook states that the runner can tag up from the base as soon as the ball is touched. Interestingly enough, the Dodgers ran on first touch in this play vs the Mets. Seemingly knowing the rule (or Conforto got lucky?)

This happened during the Cubs vs Rangers game. A grounder to first and the first baseman throws home to get the out at home plate. Catcher applies the tag, the runner is called safe. Replay clearly shows the runner is out. The Cubs challenge the call and are confident it is going to be overturned. After replay, the runner is called safe! 🤯 How can the replay booth who has every angle in the book at their disposal (not that you needed more than one) botch this call after the umpire just botched it? Do people lose their jobs over this? Have you seen a more terrible call ever in the replay challenge era?

Interesting ABS situation here. 3-2, runner goes, ball 4 is called and he pulls up into 2B. Catcher challenges… and now you start to wonder what would happen if it’s overturned. Are the announcers right, would this become a double play? Or would the umpires send the runner back to first since the original call influenced the play?

When a batter makes contact with the ball, he is no longer a batter, he is a batter-runner. The protections normally afforded to a batter in the batter’s box vanish the moment the batter makes contact. The batter-runner must be alert and avoid a defensive player who is in the act of making a play.

As much as we may not like the rule (Base runner sets his own base line & is only out when he deviates more than 3’ from his line when avoiding a tag), this is a good contact route. The runner goes way inside & on the grass to take the third baseman’s throwing lane away.

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN OFFICIAL SCORER? Here is an unreal occurance in today's Miami Marlins Chicago Cubs game. Jesus Sanchez is internationally walked, but he never goes to first base before leaving for Christian Pache. The Cubs appealed the play and Pache was ruled out 13. Rule 9.07(b)(7) says if a batter refuses to take first on a walk, the putout is 2U. The issue is this isn't refusal ... he just didn't touch. So, unless MLB figures something different, this will be Pache out 13 on appeal while standing on first base for Sanchez not touching first. For now, Sanchez is credited with a walk, and Julian Merryweather with issuing an intentional walk, but is it a walk if you never touch first? I can tell you I don't think the Marlins or Cubs had ever see this, and I'm not sure MLB or Elias Sports Bureau has either. I sure haven't. You would think touching first on a walk wouldn't be that difficult. You really can see something you've never seen before in this game.

This team was down by 7 runs in the last inning. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?

Volpe gets absolutely nothing on his throws because of his mechanics. Upper half opens up early, and he ends up guiding the ball to first on the throw because he has no power left by the time he’s releasing the ball. This along with his hesitancy to attack grounders basically gives the runner a few more steps to first than he should have by the time the ball is released.

This is a first that I’ve ever seen: challenging a call and you end up getting 3 strikes against you😅 Call on the field was out. Alabama challenged the call (obstruction on catcher) and ending up confirming the call was out, the runner at 3rd was ruled out because of the interference and then finally the runner going into home got a warning issues. You usually always see the catchers getting the short end of the stick but this time it’s the runner plus some.
