This home plate umpire, Dan Merzel, called this ball down the third base line fair which resulted in a single. The third baseman picked the ball up after he said it crossed over the line into foul territory. I say that is a foul ball and the ump made the wrong call. What do you think? Fair or foul?

This play caused some scorekeeper confusion. The batter is up with two outs and two strikes. Runner on third base. The batter swings and misses, strike three but the ball gets by the catcher. Before the catcher can throw down to first base to try and get the batter out, he tags the runner out from third who is trying to steal home. Inning over. But, who leads off next inning for the team batting? The next batter in the lineup or does the current batter come back up because he was never recorded as an out or safe? The same batter came back up to bat next inning and the umpire and coach from the opposing team didn’t say anything. Did they get it right?

Scenario 1 of 3 that I go over in my latest YouTube video “how to defend the walk to 2nd base with a runner on 3rd” For this specific scenario here’s a couple key points: •Get the ball back to the pitcher quickly. This forces the runner on third to commit and either break for home or retreat to the bag. •As pitcher is getting the ball back in the circle, peek to make sure the runner from 3rd went back to bag. •Allow the runner rounding 1st to get close to the 2nd baseman. The closer she is, the quicker the tag can be applied, allowing for an immediate throw home if the runner from third attempts to score. My biggest takeaway is at the end of this video. Let the girls try and make some plays. Get them to be competitive. The more they do it, the more comfortable they will get at it. Don’t just give up a free base- make the other team work for it.

As much as we may not like the rule (Base runner sets his own base line & is only out when he deviates more than 3’ from his line when avoiding a tag), this is a good contact route. The runner goes way inside & on the grass to take the third baseman’s throwing lane away.

This umpire gave this kid and his team two warnings for throwing the bat at the catcher. He told them if it happened again they were going to get ejected from the game. Well….it happened again. The batter hit the ball back to the pitcher and the pitcher overthrew first base. But, the umpire called a dead ball and called the batter out and ejected him from the game. The coach came out to argue and said the batter didn’t throw the bat, that it was a regular follow through on the back swing. He told the umpire they had it on film. The umpire said he had it on film too. Then the third base coach came down to argue and the umpire told the coach he was wrong and that he had it on video. You can hear the parents screaming at him. Some people said that was a terrible call and he let go legally on the follow through. You can also hear them tell the umpire that he had it out for that kid. 🤯 But a lot of people sided with the ump and said he handled it well and with that many warnings that it was a fantastic call. 💯 The umpire gave the same kid two prior warnings. Even if it wasn’t intentional, there has to be consequences after a third time. He could seriously injure the catcher. This will help the batter in the future hopefully. What do you think? Was this the right or wrong call?

This men’s softball game has an interesting play. Runner on first less than two outs, batter hits a ground ball to first. The first baseman fields it but the runner from first never leaves the bag to run to second base. The first baseman tags the runner on first while he is still on first base and then tags the base with his foot. Many said that since the runner at first never left the bag, he is not out. 🤔 While others said the runner at first is forced to run. Without looking the rule up, I would say that is a double play. The batter is definitely out and the runner is out for being tagged. He is forced to run imho. What do you think? Without looking the rule up, who is out?

This team was down by 7 runs in the last inning. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?

The pitch goes to home and Armstrong is off trying to steal second base. He slides into second and is called safe. New York challenges the call and it is overturned and he is called out. They said he came off the bag. Not strange right? However, it was ball four. Pete is entitled to second base. You can hear the announcers- “it doesn’t matter if he’s tagged. It’s ball four. The base is his.” Craig Counsel the Cubs manager was ejected when he came out to argue. Did the umpires and replay get it right? Have you ever seen such a thing? Isn’t he entitled to the base on a walk?

The issue here is the runner who scored before stays behind home plate and is waving for the next runner to get down. The home plate umpire bumps into him, trips, and falls down and doesn’t see the play. 🤯 You can defer to the field umpire but if he didn’t see it, what call can you make? 🤷‍♂️ Some said the runner should be out because the player who scored first interfered with the home plate umpire. Phillies right fielder Adolis Garcia comes up firing and throws a strike to home plate. The catcher goes to tag, Pages slides- the call- safe! The Cardinals challenged the call but in looking over the replay you can see that Andy Pages never touched home plate. But, the challenge was to see if the catcher tagged him. Replay rules that the catcher did not tag him. So the call stands- he’s safe! But, he missed home plate! Replay does not have the authority to change the call just because he missed home plate. 🤯 That is a bizarre play!💯 Do you think a call should be overturned if they are looking at a particular part of the play but notice something else like this where the runner didn’t touch home plate?

But the plate umpire said or meant to say he didn’t do it intentionally but rather defensively. I had this happen to me at 14 years old. Fast ball right at me and reactively I put my hand up to block it. The ump awarded me first base. What do you think?
