It's no secret that Michael Bay likes to shoot his films with as much practical effects as possible. In #Transformers (2007) there is a shot where Optimus Prime and Megatron crash through a building, this shot was done practically using a miniature at 1/4 scale by ILM. Doing this shot practically allowed them to get the randomness of the destruction without having to do expensive simulations. The CG robots were then added into the shot to merge the photographic plate with the CG elements. When doing live-action films, it is always a good idea to shoot physically as much as possible. This provides the VFX artists with real world reference to ground their work in and allows them to compliment the shot with CG elements. One of the reasons the original Transformers trilogy looks so good is because of the incredible blend of practical and digital effects. It is difficult to watch the film and spot what is real and what is CG. ILM VFX Supervisor Scott Farrar talks through how this scene was pulled off:

In The Shape of Water (2017), the Amphibian Man was built mostly with practical effects. A full silicone suit with scales and gills took around 3 hours a day to apply. CGI was used only to enhance the eyes and add subtle bioluminescence — reality first, magic second.

A notable scene that shot for Stargate: Atlantis but never found its way to screen was this exchange between Carter and Sheppard at the conclusion of "Reunion", the third episode of the show's fourth season. The scene was intended to develop the friendship/working relationship between these two characters and close out the episode, but we were running long and I thought it would be better to end with the Ronon-Teyla scene since it was Ronon’s episode. Blue screen here as our heroes would have looked out on the waters surrounding the city through the magic of visual effects. The scene would have concluded with a PULL BACK ON the city, the ocean and then FADE OUT.

JUST IN: Dan Bongino says the shot that Secret Service took to take out Thomas Crooks was one of the most difficult shots the USSS has had to take. Bongino says USSS had a 9-inch window to take the shot because there was a tree in the way. "The counters sn*per team that took out the shooter was a Secret Service team." "[The shot] was one of the most difficult shots that any CS team has taken in a long time. They had obviously seconds to respond." "The shot, from what I heard, there was about a nine-inch window. They had to shoot in from about 400 yards and there was a tree in the way and they still got the shot off."

It was a total thrill to both work with the legendary Industrial Light & Magic for the first time on The Running Man Movie and also reunite with Andrew Whitehurst, who I first worked with on 'Scott Pilgrim'. Here Andrew takes us through the incredible blend of in camera photography, practical effects and (yes) magnificent digital wizardry that we managed to achieve in just this last year. My endless praise goes out to him and the whole team (at Rodeo and Untold too) for their tireless work and enthusiasm. Enjoy!
