So our largest fire ever, at the time, the Dava megafire last year was mainly over muirburned managed land. Muirburn does not create firebreaks. This farmer is completely. Would he like to chop down the Scots pine woodland and farm it. What twaddle.

ares like this used to have fire break tracks but he's right rewilding lets them other grow, trees die and compound the fire risk. But worst of all, the cause is man-made. Spot on. They banned the burning of dead heather and such like while sat in their city offices with no idea of how the countryside should work. Burning removed the combustable dead wood and generated new growth for the wildlife.

The Cairngorms were at least 5°C warmer than normal when the fire started and had had reduced rainfall for 3 months. Heather moorland is increasingly flammable as summers warm, managed or not (see Dava fire). We need to return to less flammable habitats like woodland and bog.

Great that Twitter is full of instant upland land management experts. There's the minor detail that this has mostly spread at speed through bone-dry heather moorland of course, but hey, no point getting derailed by facts when theres a rant against reforesting to be had.

Why don’t you ever point the finger at the root cause - climate change driven by fossil fuel burning?? Fire breaks can only do so much when embers are blown over miles at a time and landing on excessively dry vegetation.

16% of the Cairngorms is wooded. Some of it plantation which has fire breaks. Forestry roads are fire breaks. More diverse ecosystems (rewilded land) are more resilient against wildfires including deciduous woodland which is considered a slow burn wood. I've seen this on my land.

In Kent rewilding is used for land management. I used to be a volunteer lookerer. We used highlands, konics, pigs, herdwicks and Hebridean to keep growth down. Ultimately keeping meadows and heathlands and fen land as such. Stopping them becoming scrub then subsequent woodland.

For those looking on at these horrific wildfires, who don’t understand the detail and necessity of land management in the UK, it is easy to become confused, frustrated, even fearful. Wanting, perhaps, to understand the reality of it, a simple equation for you in the hope of better and more accurate understanding: Take heed of those people who work and manage land. Who do so every day, many having done so over generations. Now subtract from that all the noise and nonsense from those who don’t. Whatever you’re left with is the truth of it. And please remember, when it comes to land and those people who live and work on it, practicality and understanding beats theory and ideology every time. And I do very much mean every-single-time.

… we used to have controlled burning on Ilkley Moor until the nutters took over. Now we have a growing fuel for uncontrolled fires. We know who is to blame!
