Do you ever just sit in silence, not knowing what to think, or feel, or even pray? That numb, hollow feeling like in Psalm 88 where you feel buried in a pit, forgotten, surrounded by darkness. And still… you wait. You wait on the Lord. Not because you feel strong, but because He is. Not because you have the right words, but because His Spirit intercedes when you have none. Even in the silence, even in the pit, His promises remain. He is near to the brokenhearted. He knows. He sees. And He does not abandon. Jesus said the Father doesn’t hear us for our many words… maybe it’s in the humbling silence that He hears your groaning heart most clearly. And somehow that’s worship, as we sit, and wait, in silence.

You can go back to the very first single he released after he became the Jay-Z we all know today. “In My Lifetime”, 1994. He told everyone EXACTLY who he was and what he’s about. And all he has done in the 31 years since, is accomplish EXACTLY EVERYTHING he said he would do. All he raps about is his REAL life. His music is based on honesty. Every step of the way he’s walking you through where he’s at in life at that current moment. His dreams, triumphs, failures (hardly any), accomplishments, flaws, maturation, etc. as a fan you feel like you’re right there with him. Some love it, some hate it. But it’s the TRUTH. And THAT’s what his fans connect to the most. His story is incredibly inspiring and motivational. Sucks for you if you can’t identify with that man.

Howard Hawks on his meeting with Al Capone & what Capone and another famous Chicago gangster thought about 'Scarface' (1932) when they saw the film: "Interviewer: Did you have any contact with Al Capone while making the picture? Hawks: While we were making 'Scarface' (1932), five or six of them came out and said, “The boss wants us to see the picture.” And I said, “You go and tell him when it comes out, he can pay a dollar and buy a ticket. They met me at the train, and they were late. Hey Baron I’ll answer for Erika. As a mom that has kids and a husband who travels during the week and has kids in the bed occasionally…..my husband gets up early to get on flights. 2 or 3 am. I may hear my husband when he gets up but usually I just go back to sleep. With or without the kids in the bed. I don’t get up with him. As a matter of fact he hates it when I do. He says it makes it harder to leave because I tell him I wish he didn’t have to go and I’ll miss him and it breaks his heart to leave. Yea I admit it I do make it hard for him to leave. But then he texts me when he gets to the airport and when he lands and all during the day. And at night we FaceTime. Do you know that Erika and Charlie didn’t have this kind of relationship? No you don’t. Because you weren’t there. How do you know that this doesn’t destroy her that she didn’t get up with him that morning? Do you have cameras on her 24/7? You are truly an unbelievable asshole. But anything to keep the hate going right? And of course since you are a failed attorney you need as many clicks as you can get to pay your bills. Gotta pay those bills. Money over morals. I can’t wait until trial when all your BS lies are debunked. Your fall will be epic and well deserved. I don’t know how you sleep at night knowing one day you’ll have to answer for everything you’ve done to this woman by God. Hope you have a good excuse ready. Not only that, also my teacher. I try to study scripture each day and learn more about Jesus every day and kind of model my life after him. My performance in the game or whatever's happening isn't my identity. Rather, as a disciple of Jesus. That's the foundation of my life and it kind of makes me who I am." That one sentence deserves to sit for a moment. My performance in the game is not my identity. That is one of the hardest things for any athlete to actually believe. The entire sports world is built around performance. Your value is your numbers. Your worth is your contract. Your identity is your stats. And Tommy Edman looked at all of that and said: none of that is who I am. He is a disciple of Jesus. That is his identity. The baseball is just what he does. He also said something that reveals how he maintains that foundation. He studies scripture every day. Not weekly. Not when he feels like it. Every day. And he is actively trying to learn more about Jesus and model his life after Him. That is discipleship. That is not a Sunday morning posture. That is a daily practice of sitting at the feet of the teacher and asking to become more like Him. In a culture that attaches worth to performance and identity to achievement, Tommy Edman is building his life on something that does not move when the batting average drops. "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). Is your identity built on what you do or on who Jesus says you are? This is what it looks like when someone refuses to let their performance define them. Tommy Edman plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the most watched teams in baseball, and he said plainly that his identity has nothing to do with what happens on the field.
