Peter Thiel on why the best businesses never compete: "Most people believe that capitalism and competition are synonyms. I believe capitalism and competition are antonyms." His point is simple: "A capitalist is someone who's in the business of accumulating capital. A world of perfect competition is a world where all the profits are competed away." Peter explains that the most important distinction in business is one nobody talks about enough. "There are two kinds of companies in this world. There are companies that are competitive and there are companies that have monopolies." His go-to example of a bad business? Restaurants. "Opening a restaurant is super competitive and nobody ever makes any money doing it." His example of a great business: Google. "Google has had no competition in search since 2002 when it definitively distanced itself from Microsoft and Yahoo, and it's been making enormous profits for the dozen years or so ever since." So what should founders actually aim for? "If you're a one-of-a-kind company, a happy company that's doing something different, you are a monopoly. It is the goal of every founder, every entrepreneur—it should be their goal to try to build a monopoly business." True market power means never having to compete in the first place.

Stripe co-founder John Collison on the two types of people who will thrive in the AI era over the next 10 to 20 years: He identifies two categories of people he's "super bullish on": First: high-agency people. "We know this at Stripe. The people who are like, I've been talking to customers. I know exactly what we should do. We got to go fix this. But the people who have that pep in their step and they want to go make Stripe better." The idea is simple. The people who don't wait around for permission, who figure out what needs doing and go do it, now have leverage they've never had before. AI lets them execute faster without needing to assemble a huge team behind them. Second: double majors. "I think if you understand software and understand finance or if you understand software and understand marketing, you now can go massively improve the entire marketing funnel for your company and one person can do." John Collison connects this to a famous Paul Graham observation: "Typically an entrepreneurship team a founding team has a collection of like five or six skills between two founders three founders." He also points to Charlie Munger's case for multidisciplinary thinking, noting it's easier than ever to pick up a functional grasp of new fields: "He thinks getting a functional understanding of many disciplines is not that hard you can just go read the books now you know you can talk to your AI about it and so I think multidisciplinary thinkers are going to do incredibly well." It is always the same question, why in the world would I want to leave America and move to India? 🇺🇸🇮🇳 This well-meaning question often communicates two things. 1. India is a lesser place to live and I am worse off for being here. 2. America is a better place to live and I would be crazy to leave. I hope to challenge these two assumptions and show people that I don't think either of these statements are true. I think my kids are being set up for a more successful life and future in India. They will have such a rich life, experiences, and community that they would never have gotten in the USA. I hear from many Indians living abroad that they miss India and want to go back. They think they will have a better life somewhere else, but it isn't until they leave that they realize how great they actually had it back home. I believe wholeheartedly that there is more to life than just money. Sure there is more money in the USA, but there is much more wealth in India when it comes to things like community, relationships, experiences, and joy.
